HL7 Technical Committee or
Special Interest Group
Mission and Charter Statement
Group Name: Java HL7 Version 3 ITS SIG
Mission
This group defines an HL7 version 3 implementation technology specification (ITS) for the Java
platform. While the focus of this group will be the definition of APIs, the group will promote
implementions to validate the API and server as reference implementations by providing a forum
for and cooperating with a variety of implementors who want to support this effort.
By providing these classes and API, this group will hasten the adoption of HL7 Version 3 by
healthcare application providers, many of whom want to develop for the Java platform.
Charter
Work Products and Contributions to HL7 Processes
This group will define application programming interfaces (APIs) to the HL7 version 3 artifacts
including the reference information model (RIM), application roles, message definitions (HMDs)
and messages, documents, etc. This group will consider a variety of use cases and applications
for the objects it defines, including but not limited to messaging (interoperable with the HL7 v3
XML ITS), documents, and "component object" support of application roles. Applicability will
be as Java-based messaging / interface components as well as intelligent interfaces to HL7 data
objects (i.e., RIM and R-MIM objects) for use with other ITS platforms, such as applications that
are primarily XML-based.
By doing this work for the Java platform, the group will also incidentally provide a model for
HL7 RIM implementations in other popular programming languages, further encouraging
development of HL7 Version 3-compliant applications.
Formal Relationships with Other HL7 Groups
The Java HL7 Version 3 ITS SIG will be sponsored by the Control/Query TC.
Formal Relationships with Groups Outside of HL7
Members of this group will, in accordance with the Control/Query TC and the Board of
Directors, engage in informal relationships with the Java Community Process (JCP) in order to
promote the specification for healthcare and HL7 on the Java platform.
