RAD TECH 244 FILM ARTIFACTS WORKSHEET - KEY 1. What is an artifact?__see notes - book 2. What are the three classifications of artifacts? book/notes PROCESSING EXPOSURE HANDLING/STORAGE 3. Classify the following artifacts and indicate if they are a + (dark) or - (light) density: PICK-OFF / MOTION / POOR SCREEN CONTACT / DOUBLE EXPOSURE / RADIATION FOG/ PI LINES/ GUIDE SHOE MARKS/ DICHORNIC STAIN/ WET PRESSURE SENSITIZATION ROLLER MARKS/ KINK MARKS/TREE STATIC/ POOR POSITIONING/ CURTAIN EFFECT WRONG FILM IN CASSETTE/ GELATIN BUILD UP/WHITE LIGHT LEAK Example of Artifacts + (dark) -(light) density: could be either Static Dirt In Cassette Roller Marks Fog – Any Type GUIDE SHOE SCRATCHES Poor Screen Contact DOUBLE EXPOSURE KINK MARKS DICHROIC STAIN KINK MARKS CURTAIN EFFECT CHATTER LINES 4. What are the three catagories of artifacts: (as it relates to the direction of film travel) not covered in lecture: RANDOM - PERPENDICULARPARALLEL (scratches) (roller marks) (guide shoe marks) 5. On the Chart above, indicate which category this artifact would have. SKIP 6. The majority of patient related artifacts could be avoided by: a) CHECKING THE PATIENT FOR ARTIFACTS BEFORE EXPOSURE b) PROPER HANDLING AND STORAGE OF FILM 7. Plus density artifacts are caused by a)KINKMARKS / FOG / ROLLER MARKS / STATIC / (see book) 8. Minus density artifacts are caused by DIRT IN CASSETTE / SCRATCHES / GUIDE SHOE MARKS / ARTIFACTS ON PT OR IN CASSETTE OR IN THE PATH OF THE BEAM 9. Artifacts seen by reflected light are caused by the PROCESSING CHEMICALS NOT WASHED OFF / FILMS STUCK TOGETHER 10. Marks made by dirt in the cassette are MINUS density and can be mistaken for CALICIFICATIONS/ MASSES in the patient’s body. 11. To properly evaluate the type of artifact TOUCH the film surface LOOK closely at the area, and RULE OUT possible causes. 12. THE PATIENT’S HANDS are the most common anatomical artifact. 13. After viewing the AP projection, and ruling out the possibility of the artifact is on the patient’s clothing, a lateral projection should be taken to locate the artifact. 14. Buttons on a patient’s clothing could be misinterpreted as pathology 15. Image appearance is affected by developer heat too high – over processed / developer and depleted /contaimenated – looks gray/underexposed 16. X-ray film is sensitive to : SEE BOOK & NOTES ________________, 17. List SOME sources of artifacts related to inadequate technical prep: FALIURE TO PROPERLY INSTRUCT OR CHANGE THE PATIENT / FAILURE TO INSPECT THE AREA UNDER THE TABLE PAD/ CHECK THE CASSETTE FOR DIRT – CLEAN CASSETTES REGULARLY Pg 2 0f 2
