Veterinary Cardiorespiratory Centre Martin Referral Services, Thera House, 43 Waverley Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1JL Tel: 01926 863445 INFORMATION SHEET SEDATION of the CARDIAC CASE DOGS Our current sedation regimes for dogs for thoracic radiography. For effective sedation dogs must be left undisturbed in a quiet environment and given 5-10 minutes to sedate. Note: For dogs, most respiratory cases are better anaesthetised to obtain good quality radiographs, by holding the lungs inflated to normal tidal volume (this improves aeration and reduces movement blur) and to perform bronchoscopy. Caution: 1. Dogs in congestive failure, or are debilitated, use a ¼ to ½ these doses - and if not enough, more can be given. 2. Boxer dogs - due to their vagal sensitivity, a low dose of ACP must be used (ie. one third of standard dose) and given i/m only. Sedative drug Dose rate Dose ACP i/v + Butorphanol 0.01 mg/kg 0.05 ml per 10kg 0.05 mg/kg 0.05 per 10kg Route Combined i/v up to 40kg, ie. use smaller relative dose in large dogs Drug concentrations: Acepromazine maleate (ACP 2mg/ml), butorphanol (Torbugesic 10mg/ml) CATS Suggested sedation regimes for cats for thoracic radiography. For effective sedation cats must be left undisturbed and given sufficient time. Caution: Doses should be reduced in cats in congestive failure or are debilitated Sedative drug Dose rate Dose Route ACP + butorphanol 0.05mg/kg + 0.3mg/kg 0.1ml per 4kg + 0.12ml per 4kg Combined i/v Drug concentrations: Acepromazine maleate (ACP 2mg/ml), Butorphanol (Torbugesic 10mg/ml) Recommended reading Martin & Corcoran (2006) Notes on: Cardiorespiratory disease of the dog and cat, 2 nd ed, Blackwell Science.
