 The use of rubber gloves when treating others when injured
 When demonstrating and class participating in a hands on lesson that they
properly use bandages scissors, tweezers and cleansings solutions
Lesson Focus
Lesson Goal:
The learner will demonstrate the First Aid procedure to clean and bandage a small
wound to the extent that the wound will stop bleeding and prevent infection.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate how to apply pressure to a bleeding wound
2. Demonstrate how to clean a wound with soap and water
3. Demonstrate the use of cleansing agents to clean a wound
4. Demonstrate how to bandage a wound with a bandage, gauze and tape
5. Identify any symptoms that may which would warrant you to consult a doctor
6. Acknowledge the importance of treating a wound so that it doesn’t become
infected.
Rationale:
First Aid skills are useful in all aspects of a person’s life at home and at work. It could
save a persons life or your own. Proper cleansing and bandaging will prevent
infection; infection can lead to greater health complications.
Required Materials
Handouts:
1. Steps of Cleaning and Bandaging a small wound
2. What you should have in your First Aid Kit
3. When you should consult a doctor - Symptoms & Appearance of a Wound
4. Medical Conditions that can result from a infectious wound
5. List of Serious incidents that need to be reported to Workplace Safety &
Health Division
6. Quiz
Presentation Materials:
1. Photocopies of handouts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6
2. PowerPoint presentation
3. Overheads of PowerPoint presentation (backup - if computer or projectors do
not work)
4. First Aid kit and supplies for instructor demonstration

5. First Aid supplies needed for the learners demonstration

Lesson Outline
Guiding Questions:
1. Has anyone ever had to deal with an emergency situation?
2. Anyone ever taken any First Aid training?
3. What should be in your First Aid kit?
4. Who has a First Aid kit in their home? Vehicle? Work?
5. When should you see a doctor?
6. Has anyone had or know of someone that has had a simple wound turn into a
bad infection that resulted in a loss of a limb?
7. Has anyone here ever had to phone Workplace Safety & Health Division to
report an incident when they have been at work?
Focusing Event:
Pictures of amputations that have occurred from a wound infection have a big impact
as a visual aid. It shows the end result from improper First Aid or the reluctance of
seeing a doctor when required. I would also show pictures of badly infected wounds.
A question posed to the learners “When should you see a doctor?” Have a class
discussion about identifying any symptoms that may occur which would warrant
consulting a doctor. Then distribute handout #5. “Identify any symptoms that may
occur which would warrant consulting a doctor”.
Lesson Delivery:
Before lesson starts have visual aids out on the table- bowl/cup, wash cloths, First Aid
Kit, soap, Box of Band Aids, Peroxide, Alcohol, hand prop, antibiotic ointment

Rationale *Importance of cleaning a wound properly. First Aid skills are
useful in all aspects of a person’s life at home and at work. It could save a
persons life or your own. Proper cleansing and bandaging will prevent
infection; infection can lead to greater health complications.

Each learner will demonstrate the steps of cleaning and bandaging a small wound.
They will use First Aid kits provided.
