ASTERACEAE Cosmos bipinnatus, Cosmos koz moze bi pin a tus Description: Common and nearly carefree garden annual with feathery leaves and showy, daisy-like flowers. Origin: Mexico and the far Southern United States. Height x width: Up to 6 feet tall. Growth habit: Upright. Foliage: Opposite, pinnate, lanceolate or elliptical lobes, very fine textured. Flowers: Shades of pink, red, purple or white. Ray flowers, 2 to 3 inches across, are born on tall pedicels. Some of the newer varieties have double flowers and striped petals. Culture: Full sun, best in well-drained, moderately dry soil. Pests and problems: Plant in an area where height is not a concern, and tie or stake them, as they can get so heavy that they bend. Newer varieties are usually more compact. Uses: Background plant, cut flower. Other facts of interest: Birds, finches in particular, love cosmos seed, so leave the plants in the garden over the winter rather than cutting them down. Propagation: Seed.
