India’s Early Kingdom
1. MAGADHA, a kingdom in northeastern India, became large and powerful by 400 B.C.
2. They became wealthy by trading products from their FARMS, FORESTS, and MINES.
3. Near the end of the 4th century B.C., their last leader CHANDRAGUPTA
MAURYA
founded the MAURYA Empire by conquering many territories on the Indian subcontinent.

The Maurya Empire
and his powerful army formed India’s first great empire in 321 B.C.
CHANDRAGUPTA
The MAURYA Empire was very organized because he set up a BUREAUCRACY to help
him efficiently run his newly conquered people. He also began a system of SPIES to help watch
over them.
3. He improved business and TRADE for India by building ROADS and CANALS.

WHEAT, RICE, and TEA were the main farm crops in India at this time.
In 272 B.C., his grandson ASOKA became emperor. He also conquered many new lands until
finding out that over 100,000 people died in taking KALINGA, an area on India’s east coast.
Having his forces kill so many people affected him so much that he switched religions and became a
BUDDHIST.

8. After Asoka’s death the empire DECLINED because the emperors were weak. It split up into
smaller KINGDOMS. Still MISSIONARIES were sent to other lands to spread his
peaceful ideas.
The Gupta Empire
1. By AD 320 the Gupta Dynasty arose in NORTHEAST India. This family would rule until AD
650 when a group by the name of the WHITE
HUNS invaded India.
2. India soared to new heights under Gupta rule. During the rule of CHANDRA
GUPTA II
India had its GOLDEN
AGE. During this time the people of the Gupta Empire developed
ART, MUSIC, WRITING, MATHEMATICS, and METAL- working.
3. Artists painted MURALS or wall paintings. Poets and writers like KALIDASA wrote in
SANSKRIT, the language of the empire.
4. Indian ASTRONOMERS located the planets and proved that the earth was ROUND.
5. Mathematicians invented the DECIMAL system or the HINDU-ARABIC numeral system.
Gupta mathematicians also came up with the symbol for ZERO. OR

6. Doctors invented over 120 SURGICAL instruments. Teachers formed UNIVERSITIES
which were probably among the first in the world.

KINGDOMS

India’s Legacy
1. India has added two major religions to mankind. They are HINDUISM and BUDDHISM
These two religions influence many buildings, temples and shrines worldwide. A huge stone complex
in Cambodia with Hindu roots is named ANGKOR WAT.

HINDUISM is huge in India today, but less than 1 out of 100 people in India follow
BUDDHISM.
3. India produces the most motion pictures in the entire world. The capital of their film industry is
BOLLYWOOD.

GANDHI helped India gain freedom from BRITISH rule in 1947 by practicing AHIMSA
