Cold War Metaphor/Simile
Poster
In this project you will
create a one-page poster that
reflects on the issues and events
that will/have been studied in
this unit on the Cold War. You
will create a visual and a written
analysis that convey what you believe to be the essence of the Cold War. The
simile should reflect the essential relationship between the two superpowers.
Using notes, your text and other historical references and your own personal
images of the Cold War, you will create a one-page poster showing your own visual
metaphor. This poster must be bold, artistic, creative, and should reflect your
understanding of the Cold War. You must follow the following criteria:
 Title: The Cold War is Like ??????? (simile)
 Visual Image: You will create a poster that has matching images placed in the
middle of the poster. You must use at least 2 details that symbolically represent
something in the image. Example: “The Cold War is Like Two Gamblers in the
Old West Playing Cards”, What would the cards, chips, guns, etc., represent?
The guns on the gambler in the picture represent the threat of nuclear weapons.
 Explanation: Under the image write the phrase the Cold War is like a __________
because ____________________. Under each element of the image, write a brief
explanation of the symbols in the image.
Robert Oppenheimer, the creator of the A-bomb stated that “the U.S. and the
Soviet Union are like two scorpions in a bottle, each capable of killing each
other but only at the risk of losing his own life”.
Sir Winston Churchill deemed the Cold War as a “Balance of terror”
