Course Description
(0703104) Listening I (3 credit hours)
To develop the ability of students to understand real life spoken English by providing them
with a systematic and guided training in listening comprehension. The course offers a variety
of topics and activities with recordings of natural and spontaneous speech to enable students
to respond to different varieties of English spoken by native speakers.
(0703106( Grammar (1) (3 credit hours)
To provide a theoretical review of basic structures of the English grammar such as: The
interrogative, the number distinction, the tenses, and the modal auxiliaries. The goal of this
review is to offer students ample opportunities to identify, to understand, and to use these
basic structures.
(0703109) Reading (1) (3 credit hours)
Students will be exposed to different varieties of English texts in order to improve their skills
in reading English texts both intensively and extensively. Discussion groups are organized to
debate interesting topics and issues based on pre-readings of authentic texts such as essays,
reports, and articles taken form newspapers and magazines. Strategies of home reading are
also encouraged.

Students are introduced to the basic principles and techniques of translation with emphasis on
simultaneous translation from Arabic into English and vice versa. Texts that are required to be
translated will reflect various types of registers and styles. Students are expected to translate
particular texts in class and at home as a means of extensive training.

Prerequisite: (0703106) English Grammar (1)
Students will learn fundamental concepts well-stated topic sentences, support, unities, and
cohesion along with writing mechanics as indentation, punctuation, and outlining. In writing
techniques, students will have to use various syntactic structures in order to write wellorganized paragraphs. Passages written by students should also reflect various kinds of
writing as the expository or the descriptive method.

To introduce students to the study of the structure of the English sentence and its comprising
elements based on the grammatical analysis of noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases,
adverb phrases and prepositional phrases.
(0703211) Introduction to Literature (3 credit hours)
Students will be introduced to the various concepts and definitions of "literature" and to the
three major genres including poetry, fiction, and drama. Students will be exposed to elements,
distinctive qualities, and the salient features of each genre. In-class discussions will be
centered on stories, poems, and one or two one – act plays.
(0703211) Introduction to Linguistics (3 credit hours)
Students will be introduced to the basic concepts and areas of linguistics including phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Branches of linguistics like psycholinguistics,
sociolinguistics and applied linguistics are also briefly dealt with.
(0703225) History of the English Language (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703201) Writing in English (1)
Students will survey the origins and developments of the English language to the present time
ranging from Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. Students are asked to
analyze various scripts written in Old, Middle, and early Modern English Forms. They are
also required to trace the development of selected linguistic elements.

Prerequisite: (0703201) Writing (1)
To acquaint students with the field of general phonetic description of consonants and vowels,
voicing including the places and manners of articulation, co-articulation encompassing broad
and narrow transcription, phones, allophones, phonemes, syllabification, natural classes,
distinctive features along with tone, intonation, and stress.
(0703231) British and American Literature 1(3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703211) Introduction to Literature
A survey of the English prose, poetry and drama of Great Britain, Ireland and the United
States of America form the earliest times to the 1800s is conducted. This is done through the
tracing of the historical development of this literature by highlighting the major movements,
writers, and influences of the era.
(0703247) Methods of Teaching English Language (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
Students are introduced to the fields of teaching English as a foreign or second language
through the study of major approaches to foreign language teaching. This is conducted
through the teaching of different language skills, the preparation of teaching materials and
exercises, the use of audio–visual teaching aids, and the testing of language skills. Students
are asked to solve several teaching problems, to write a short term paper, and to evaluate one
or more of the methods studied throughout the course.

To teach students expository essay writing and different types of letter writing. Students will
be taught to choose a subject of genuine interest and understanding, to narrow it down, and to
write a thesis showing the topic, the intent, and controlling idea that governs a piece of
writing. Students are required to write some essays that are well organized, with ideas well
supported by facts, personal experience, and statistics. Students will also learn how to write
formal and business letters.

Prerequisite: (0703200) Translation 1
An advanced course based on the Translation (I) course. Students are exposed to numerous
texts from different scientific, military, and literary styles. Class exercises and home
assignments include translation of a number of passages of various lengths so as to develop
means of translation criticism.
(0703306) Conversation (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703104) Listening 1
Students are trained to conduct a reasonably long conversation in English with fluency and
accuracy with the ability to develop arguments. Students should discuss a variety of topics
either in pairs or in groups. The primary skills required are correct pronunciation of English
sounds and adequate construction of correct sentences.
(0703311) British Novel (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703211) Introduction to Literature
Students are introduced to the most prominent 19th century British novels and novelists. The
course will lay special emphasis on differences in temper, sensibility, and techniques used by
different writers. Students are expected to closely study four British novels. Students should
also be able to identify and recognize the characteristic features of each novel studied in the
course.
(0703312) American Drama (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703211) Introduction to Literature
Students will be introduced to the basic elements of drama including dialogue, action plot,
and characterization. Students will be required to study at least one classical play and some
other five American plays from different periods and literatures.
(0703315) British and American poetry (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
A close study of English and American poems is conducted with special emphasis on the
varieties of poetic from and the means of interpretation and evaluation. The works studied
will be primarily from at least three different centuries.
(0703322) Syntax 1 (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703202) Advanced English Grammar (2)
This course functions as an advanced English grammar course. It aims at introducing students
to the ways of analyzing constituents of clauses. Upon the completion of this course, students
will be able to analyze nominal, verbal, adjectival and adverbial clauses.
(0703412) Literary Criticism (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703311) British Novel
Students will be introduced to some literary theories, principles, and interests of criticism. The
course includes a brief introduction to the history of literary theory and its major schools.
Students are required to select a text, analyze, and interpret it according to one of the
approaches discussed in the classroom.
(0703419) Shakespeare (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703312) American Drama
Students are introduced to Shakespeare's major achievements and his contribution to English
literature. Three to five plays representing Shakespeare's literary merits and development are
selected for examination and analysis. These respectively represent the histories, Roman
plays, tragedies, romances, and comedies. Students are required to write a relatively long term
paper on one of these plays and to discuss its language, imagery, or characters. Students are
shown video versions of the plays for the intention of comparison and analysis.
(0703421) Error Analysis (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
Students are introduced to the major views representing the error analysis approach to
language learning. This introduction is achieved through reading a selection of articles that
are to allow students to identify, label, and account for errors produced by Jordanian and Arab
students learning English through investigating plausible sources of error. Towards the end of
the course, students are expected to hand in a report summarizing the results of a piece based
on relevant research.

Prerequisite: (0703322) Syntax 1
Students will study the English verb system in detail. The course deals thoroughly with
tenses, aspects, and phases. Focus will be also given to catenaries, phrasal and prepositional
verbs, verb complementation, and modal auxiliaries.

Prerequisite: (0703104) Listening (1)
To develop students ability to understand some sophisticated skills that were introduced at
level one. The course focuses on intonation, rhetoric, pitch, and their effects on meaning
assignment. The emphasis is on note-taking and understanding contextual clues as the course
is also useful for possible interpreters and translators.

Prerequisite: (0703109) English (1)
To introduce students to a wide range of reading materials and the skills involved in reading
academic subjects. These include practice in skimming and scanning, identifying main and
supporting ideas, making inferences and using context clues and word analysis to guess word
meanings. The course also provides students with practice in vocabulary- building techniques
and the use of the dictionary.
(0703219) Literary Text Analysis (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703211) Introduction to Literature
Students are introduced to close reading and analysis of literary texts. Students are required to
read short stories, poetry and one–act plays. The objective of the course is to teach students to
develop persuasive interpretations based primarily on textual evidence and rhetorical
understanding. Reading poetry. Students should be able to scan a poem and to distinguish the
differences in tone, color, voice, verse from, subject, and history.
(0703313) English Short Shorty (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703211) Introduction to Literature
The course will introduce students to the short story as a genre in the 19th century and after.
Some ten short stores will be selected to represent different techniques, themes, and subjects.
Students are required to select a short story (not discussed in the classroom) and to explore it
critically by analyzing its point of view, narrative technique, characters, and setting.
(0703362) English Morphology (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
To acquaint students with the study of work structure in English and related morphological
processes, such as: affixation (derivation and inflection). Relevant morphophonemic
processes are also studied as they pertain to changes of word structures. It also covers
processes of word formation such as compounding, blending, back formation, acronyms, and
abbreviations.

Prerequisite: (0703231) British and American Literature (1)
A continuation of the offered course: British and American Literature from the beginnings to
1800, extending the same type of study from 1800 up to the present day. It begins with the
Romantic period, followed by the riches and diversity of the Victorian Age up to the twentieth
century modernism and postmodernism movements.
(0703424) Sociolinguistics (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
The course aims to study language in its social context. It also aims at providing students with
a general introduction to this branch of linguistics including the aspects of the connections
between language and society.
(0703425) Second Language Acquisition (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: (0703221) Introduction to Linguistics
To survey some background information related to current issues dominating the research on
second language acquisition (SLA). The topics in this course will include issues related to
SLA, such as age, critical period, motivation, personality, first language, neurological aspects,
strategies of language learning, and the contribution of SLA research.

To Analyze Islamic texts in English with a view to enriching the students' abilities in
vocabulary and structure related to Islamic law, Quranic reading and studies, Jurisprudence,
Islamic expressions.
(0703206)Teaching English as a Foreign Language (3 credit hours)
The main objective of the course is to train students to teach English as a foreign language. It
also explores the different methods and strategies that are used to teach English as a foreign
language by focusing on how to teach the four basic skills of language.
(0703207) Language and Culture (3 credit hours)
To work in a situation that serves as an interface between two or more cultural groups. It
focuses on matters of language and culture and it also deals with aspects of culture as they
interact with language and specific topics as dialects and language in situations of cultural
interaction.
