L.S. 2 (A): Cell Organelles
A. Two Types of Cells:
 Prokaryotic cells do NOT have membrane-bound organelles inside the cytoplasm.
o Ex: Bacterial cells.
 Eukaryotic cells DO have membrane-bound organelles inside the cytoplasm.
o Ex: Animal and plant cells.
B. Looking Inside Cells:
 Organelles are tiny structures that carry out a special function in the cell.
C. Enter the Cell:
 The cell wall is the tough, rigid outer covering that protects the cell and gives it
shape.
o The Fence.
 The cell membrane is a protective layer around cells that allows material to enter and
leave the cell.
o The doorway or screen.
D. Organelles in the Cytoplasm:
 The cytoplasm is the gelatin-like substance that flows throughout the cell.

Role
Nucleus
Control Center
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function
o Directs all cell activities.
o Houses genetic material in
chromosomes.
Transportation System o Small network of tubes that moves
substances along.
Ribosomes
Protein Factories
o Makes proteins. (materials for the
cell to use)
Mitochondria
Powerhouse
o Releases energy for the cell.
Golgi Bodies
Post Office
o Packages and sends material in the
cell.
Chloroplasts
Food producers
Vacuoles
Storage Tank
o Stores food, water, and waste.
Lysosomes
Cleanup Crew
o Breaks down nutrients and old cell
parts.
o Photosynthesis occurs here.
o Chlorophyll pigment traps light.
