We have received a number of enquiries from community pharmacies regarding how to
access ChloraPrep. This is in response to a growing number of GP prescriptions, and
hospital referrals to District nurse teams.
ChloraPrep is currently the only licensed cutaneous antiseptic available containing 2%
chlorhexidine gluconate w/v and 70% isopropyl alcohol v/v (MHRA PL 31760/0002) that meets
the current EPIC2 (Pratt RJ et al J Hosp Infect 2007; 65 (Suppl): S1-S64) and Saving Lives (www.clean-safecare.nhs.uk) guidelines on vascular access and the maintenance of line insertion sites.
It is listed in MIMS and BNF, but so far does not yet have listing in Drug Tariff. However
ChloraPrep remains a licensed GSL medicine in the UK, and if prescribed is fully
reimbursed by the PPA.
