NES Pharmacy News Incorporating Programme of Events Autumn 2013 PBSGL Ann innovative approach to CPD, or just another acronym? In this issue Educational resources: New and updated resources available Pharmacy programme: Courses until January 2014 Accessible Word Version Welcome to the Autumn 2013 NES Pharmacy News incorporating the NES Pharmacy Programme of Events. We are delighted to bring you a wide range of local NES courses from September 2013 through to January 2014 – including an exciting new initiative in each local area – Practice Based Small Group Learning (PBSGL) – which we are sure you will find enjoyable and of real benefit to your practice. You will find a full description of PBSGL on page 7. Your feedback told us that it is difficult to book courses too far ahead of time, so we have split the 2013-14 session into two halves – Autumn courses are listed in this programme and in January 2014 we will send you a Spring 2014 Programme. National topics this session will focus on: Detecting cancer early – Autumn 2013 Physical exercise ( including drugs in sports and sports injuries) – Spring 2014 Professionalism and the role of the pharmacy technician We are continuing to offer webinars (see p5) on a wide range of topics which you can join live or watch later; and more opportunities to join multiprofessional courses with GPs in the West of Scotland. Pharmacy technicians can continue to enjoy attending the local courses for pharmacists and/or learn with their colleagues at local pharmacy technician only courses. Once again, we invite pre-reg tutors to bring their trainees to local events; prereg trainees should book their place on ibooklet in Portal in the same way as pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. www.portal.scot.nhs.uk. All you need to do now is log on and book these events which will help meet your CPD needs. Click on the course in ibooklet to see full details of learning outcomes and a course description. All courses (except Return to Practice) continue to be free of charge to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pre-reg trainees working in community, hospital or primary care in NHS Scotland This programme also brings you details of new topics available as distance learning and electronic pdf resources – you will find more information on page 6. Finally, NES Pharmacy would like to thank you for the valuable feedback you gave us in the recent survey. We are already making changes and enhancements to our CPD programmes in response to your suggestions and comments. Please continue to give us your feedback following each course using the online Questback form; this can now be completed on smartphones and tablets, and will only take 5 minutes of your time! Your feedback is extremely valuable to us and helps us continually improve NES courses. We hope you find all these learning opportunities to be useful and enjoyable in supporting your CPD this Autumn. Why not be one of the first to try out a PBSGL session? Places are available for all courses on a first come first served basis! We look forward to seeing you there! PBSGL stands for "Practice Based Small Group Learning" and is an important part of CPD for many GPs - and now pharmacists and pharmacy technicians too. The PBSGL programme is designed to give you, as a practitioner, the opportunity to define and engage in learning activities which are selfdirected and related to authentic practice problems. Introduction – what is PBSGL? The idea was born in 1986 at McMaster University, Canada, when a group of eight GPs met up, bringing clinical problems from their practices as a stimulus for discussion. “Practice” referred to the practice of medicine, not “the GP practice” as we understand it in this country. From these modest beginnings PBSGL has grown to involve over 5000 members throughout the world. There are now 100 GP groups in Scotland with nearly 1000 members in all. Interest is growing throughout the rest of the UK, and throughout other professions like pharmacy. What happens at a PBSGL meeting? To form a PBSGL group, GPs (and now pharmacists and practice nurses) organise themselves into learning groups of five to eight people. Members can be linked to one GP practice or from several practices – the latter option being more popular. Groups meet in their local communities at times, places and frequencies of their own choosing. Each group chooses one of its members to act as a facilitator. This facilitator requires specific training, which is not difficult, but does make the process run more smoothly. The groups study specially-designed educational modules which are provided to all group facilitators on a password-protected part of the PBSGL website. Modules contain four elements: An introduction Specific case problems for the group to work through An information section which may include appropriate validated support materials A case commentary for each problem The introduction section of a PBSGL module aims to highlight the gap between current practice and “best practice”, in order to engage the learner, and to present the topic as relevant to him or her. One or more cases are then provided to raise the problems highlighted in the introduction. The group then discusses these problems in a free (but facilitated) discussion. In trying to answer the problems, the group members refer to their own experience, and the information section of the module. The information section is not a thorough review; rather it represents best available evidence relevant to the problems detailed in the cases. Each case is accompanied by a case commentary which illustrates practical ways of applying the information presented to the clinical problem. There is no standard formula for PBSGL meetings. Venues vary from conference facilities, or health centres, to group members’ homes. Timings vary from one hour per week to a weekend every three months. The group itself decides. On completion of a module, the group is required to undertake an evaluation. The purpose of this is not only as an element in the continuous quality improvement of module production, but (more importantly) to assess group members’ commitment to change. Finally PBSGL helps reduce professional isolation, and is particularly valued by those who may live and work far from other educational resources. The chance to talk with colleagues about everyday clinical matters, in a facilitated educational environment, can lead to successful groups lasting for many years. Pharmacy PBSGL groups The number of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians using PBSGL has increased significantly in the last year. In 2012, several areas in Scotland were involved in uni-professional pharmacy groups - Ayrshire, Lothian and Glasgow. A number of volunteers trained to become facilitators, and we hope some of these pilot groups will continue to meet. All staff in NES Pharmacy, including local pharmacist tutors, will have been trained as facilitators and available to support new groups to be set up this Autumn. 10 modules have now been ‘pharmacised’ in a similar way to the ‘tartanisation’ of the original Canadian modules in the early days of the PBSGL programme. One recently constructed module: “Patient Safety – High Risk Medicines” was developed in Scotland by a GP and pharmacist, and it is hoped that more modules will be produced in this way. In late 2013 NES Pharmacy will host pre-registration pharmacists for a two-month placement and it is hoped that they may be involved in adapting and modifying further PBSGL modules. Recently, we were inundated with applications from pharmacists wishing to join with GPs to form inter-professional learning groups. Around 11 groups across Scotland are in the process of meeting together and several groups have already undertaken a number of modules together. So this coming session, NES Pharmacy would like to offer you the opportunity to get involved in a PBSGL group in your local area. The two topics planned for PBSGL groups in each area are: Patient safety (Nov) Patient safety - High Risk Medicines (Feb). Why not apply now and try something new? Details of PBSGL in your local area are on the following pages. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. NES Pharmacy would like to give pharmacy practitioners in Scotland a chance to try a regular quiz on what’s new and happening in pharmacy, medicines and the NHS. Our sister centre in England has developed this tool and we have negotiated for suitable quizzes to be used by practitioners in Scotland. Completion of the quiz will then give you a score out of 10. You can try to improve on your score every time! Please also let us know what you think of e challenge. In June there were 10 clinical questions on asthma, cancer, measles and many more!
