Introduction
In these tasks, you will be required to operate music sequencing and editing
application(s) for a music or performing arts situation and operate music notation
application(s).
You will be assessed on:
 assembling, editing and mixing a multi-tracked sequence with four or more
instruments and approximately 70 bars in length using either software
instruments, or a combination of software and real instruments that meets the
application(s) specifications and uses tempo changes; quantisation; feel; and
insert and mix effects,
 using music notation software to prepare and edit a notated music score of
approximately 40 bars in length with a minimum of five instrumental parts that
follows notation conventions,
 using music notation software to prepare and edit a short vocal score of
approximately 16 bars in length with four voice parts that follows notation
conventions
Award of Grades
 For Merit, you must be able to assemble, edit and mix a sequence that is
balanced and has sonic clarity, feel and depth. You must also prepare and edit
music notation that contains second verse lyrics and two of – tuplets, phrase
marks, key change(s), expression, transposition, drum key.
 For Excellence, you must be able to assemble, edit and mix a sequence that is
balanced and has sonic clarity, feel and depth; and stylistic integrity. You must
also prepare and edit music notation that demonstrates stylistic consistency
applicable to the genre and context; contains refined score layout including
graphic symbols; and two of – grace notes, metre change(s), two or more parts
within a stave.

Assessment Activity
Task One: Operate digital music sequencing and editing application(s) for a
music or performing arts situation.
For this task you must assemble, edit and mix a multi-tracked sequence with four
or more instruments that is approximately 70 bars in length using either software
instruments, or a combination of software and real instruments. You must follow
the application(s) specifications in doing this.
Select a piece of music (score chart or audio) for your multi-tracked sequence that
contains tempo changes.
For achieved you must demonstrate use of quantisation while maintaining the
“feel” of the music. You must use insert and mix effects.
For merit your sequence will also demonstrate balanced mix, sonic clarity and
depth.
For excellence your sequence will also demonstrate stylistic integrity, that is it
must conform to the conventions of timbre and mix placement as applicable to the
genre and context you have selected.
Task Two: Demonstrate operation of digital music notation software.
You will create a notated music score of a minimum five instrumental parts that is
approximately 40 bars in length and is prepared and edited using music notation
software and follows six notation conventions.
Select either another piece of music or use the piece from task one (score chart or
audio) for your notated music score.
For achieved your score must contain: correct score layout, key and time
signatures, repeats, dynamics, expression and tempo markings, transposition,
chord symbols, lyrics.
For merit your score must contain: grace notes, tuplets, phrase marks, metre, key
change and second verse lyrics.
For excellence your score must contain: graphic symbols, metre and key changes,
hidden parts, and must demonstrate stylistic consistency applicable to the genre
and context.
Task Three:
You must create a short vocal score of four voice parts that is approximately 16
bars in length that is prepared and edited using music notation software and
follows notation conventions.

Select either another piece of music or use the piece from another task (score
chart or audio) for your notated music score.
For achieved your score must include relevant lyrics and/or vocalese.
For merit your score must also include second verse lyrics.
For excellence your score must also demonstrate refined score layout.
Additional information:
You are expected to take due care and use common sense with all electrical
equipment, observing manufacturers’ recommendations and warnings stated in
operation manuals.
