Chpt. 1 Test
1) Read through the following study guide.
2) Do at least three practice problems from each section
3) If you do not understand come in and see me for help!
Whole Numbers & Place Value
- standard form
25
- written form
twenty-five
- expanded form
20 + 5
Decimals & Place Value
-standard form
-written form
-expanded form
0.25
twenty five hundredths
0.2 + 0.05
Ordering Decimals
-Putting decimals in order from greatest to least and least to
greatest.
-Reading decimals off of a number line
-Greater Than (>) , Less Than (<) , Equal to (=)
Estimating Decimals
-Rounding to the nearest whole number 10.93----> 11
4.49 ----> 4
- Rounding two numbers and then being able to add, subtract,
multiply or divide them.
4.29 x 3.8 ----> 4 x 4 = 16
-Compatible numbers (stay as close to the original number as possible)
21.4 x 38.92  20 x 40 = 800
-Front-End estimation (add the front end numbers, then estimate the decimals to 0
or 1).
Adding and Subtracting Decimals
-Line up the decimal points
-Add zeros for any empty spaces
-Properties of Addition (Identity, Commutative, Associative)
Multiplying Decimals
-decimal times a decimal
-decimal times a whole number
-move the decimal to the LEFT for however many decimals there
are in the problem.
.314 ----> 3 decimal spaces
x .97 ----> + 2 decimal spaces
.30458
5 decimal spaces
Multiplying and Dividing Decimals by 10, 100, 1000
-Remember the RULE!
1) Multiply move to the RIGHT
2) Divide move to the LEFT
3) Move the decimal as many spaces to the right or left as there
are zeros.
Dividing Decimals
-Line the decimals up
-You don’t want a decimal in the divisor---Make it a whole number
-Whatever you do to the outside do to the inside
-If the divisor doesn’t go into the dividend add a decimal and a zero
BRING THE DECIMAL UP!
ADD ZEROS IF NECESSARY
Order of Operations
1) Parentheses
2) Exponents
3) Multiply and Divide from left to right
4) Add and Subtract from left to right
Repeating Decimal  0.8383838…..  0.83
Terminating Decimal ----> .625
