Growth of construction output resumed
Construction – May 2006
In May, seasonally adjusted total construction output at constant prices increased by 3.6%
month-on-month. In terms of year-on-year comparison, total construction output at constant
prices was up by 11.0% (12.1% working days adjusted). The planning and building control
authorities granted 12 469 building permits. The approximate value of permitted constructions
grew by 77.5% year-on-year.

Year-on-year, total construction output at constant prices was up by 11.0%, and by 12.1%
working days adjusted (May 2006 was one working day shorter).
Construction work of contractors and subcontractors to enterprises with 20+ employees grew by
11.5% year-on-year at constant prices. Increases were registered for nearly all kinds of construction
work. New construction, reconstruction and modernisation (+10.3%) contributed to this growth with 8.9
percentage points, repair and maintenance (+20.2%) with 2.2 percentage points, construction work
carried out abroad (+91.1%) with 1.4 percentage points. Other work fell (-65.4%) and contributed to
the growth with -1.0 percentage points.
Employment in construction enterprises with 20+ employees grew by 0.7%. The average monthly
nominal wage of employees increased by 12.1% year-on-year and reached CZK 20 656, the real
wage rose by 8.7%. The average hourly wage increased by 12.2% year-on-year and stood at CZK
126. Labour productivity per employee was up by 10.7% and labour productivity per hour worked grew
by 10.9%. Unit wage costs rose by 1.3%.
The planning and building control authorities granted 12 469 building permits in May 2006 (of
which 6 303 for new constructions and 6 166 for renewals and enhancements). The number of
building permits granted dropped by 4.4% year-on-year.
The approximate value of constructions permitted in May 2006 reached CZK 51.7 billion (of which
new constructions made up CZK 23.8 billion and renewals and enhancements CZK 27.9 billion).
Compared to May 2005, approximate value increased by 77.5%; the value of permitted renewals and
enhancements grew roughly 3.3 times (contribution 66.6 percentage points) and was affected by
planned modernisation and reconstruction projects in the energy sector; the value of permitted new
constructions rose by 15.4% (contribution 10.9 percentage points).
The planning and building control authorities permitted 3 857 dwellings to be constructed, which
was by 181 dwellings more than in May 2005. Out of that, 3 158 dwellings will be built as new
constructions (+162 permitted dwellings year-on-year) and 699 dwellings will be obtained by renewals
and enhancements (+19 permitted dwellings year-on-year). The approximate value of newly permitted
dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings reached CZK 7.9 billion.
The planning and building control authorities permitted the construction of buildings with a floor
space of 758.8 thousand m 2 (-11.2% year-on-year), of which residential buildings made up 441.0
thousand m2 (+8.6%) and non-residential buildings 317.8 thousand m 2 (-29.2%). The floor space of
new buildings was 701.6 thousand m2 and of renewals and enhancements 57.2 thousand m 2. The
average floor space of 127.5 m 2 per dwelling with approximate value CZK 18.6 thousand per m 2 was
permitted for new construction of residential buildings.
