Field Guide Project
Goal: To research an assigned ecosystem and present your final project in a field
guide format.
Project Outline: Using Internet and print resources, you will create a “mini-book”
about your specific ecosystem. You will describe the area’s climate, locations
throughout the world, and examples of various organisms that live there. Chapter
three in your text book will be helpful in learning basic information about your
ecosystem. The final project should include both text and pictures as well as a list of
sources used. You can create your field guide in written format or as a PowerPoint
presentation.
Here is an outline for the organization of your project:
Cover page (Title, your name, a picture, etc.)
1st page: Table of Contents (list a title for each page and the page number)
2nd page: DESCRIPTION of the biome or ecosystem (ie: pictures, climate, locations throughout
the world, a map, abiotic & biotic factors that affect the environment there, etc.)
3rd- 6th pages: A possible FOOD WEB, WATER CYCLE, NITROGEN CYCLE, & CARBON
CYCLE diagram from this biome or ecosystem
7th page: A detailed description of a DECOMPOSER from this environment (ie: picture,
common name, scientific name, where does it fit in the food web, how does it get its food,
behaviors, is it an endangered species, etc.)
8th page: A detailed description of a PRODUCER from this environment (ie: picture,
common name, scientific name, where does it fit in the food web, how does it get its food,
behaviors, is it an endangered species, etc.)
9th page: A detailed description of an HERBIVORE from this environment (ie: picture,
common name, scientific name, where does it fit in the food web, how does it get its food,
behaviors, is it an endangered species, etc.)
10th page: A detailed description of a CARNIVORE from this environment (ie: picture,
common name, scientific name, where does it fit in the food web, how does it get its food,
behaviors, is it an endangered species, etc.)
11th page: A detailed description of a OMNIVORE from this environment (ie: picture,
common name, scientific name, where does it fit in the food web, how does it get its food,
behaviors, is it an endangered species, etc.)
12th page: A description of CONSERVATION practices in place to protect this environment
(ie: laws on hunting or pollution, National Park or Wildlife Refuge, etc.)
13th page: List of REFERENCES
Important Notes:
• You must use at least one print resource (ie: book, magazine, newspaper, etc.) in addition to Internet
resources to research your information. Please use my Science website in order to find useful Internet
sites for your research.
• We will work on this project during several class periods although you will be expected to work on it
at home as well. I will let you know ahead of time when we will be working on it during class so that
you can bring your information to school.
