A short summary of my career
My early career (1991-1997) was on polar ozone with field campaigns in the Arctic and
comprehensive modelling. In 1997, I joined the newly established Rossby Centre research unit at
SMHI tasked with climate modelling. This work came to benefit a broad range of Swedish research on
the climate system and its change, impacts and adaptation, with significant international contributions.
In 2000-2003, I coordinated the Mistra-funded strategic environmental research programme
SWECLIM. In 2002-2007, I served as Head of the Rossby Centre. During this time, Swedish climate
modelling created a resource for impact research as well as policy-related activities, and became
affiliated with major European and Nordic research networks, projects and international efforts.
In 2007, my work became more strongly focused on the use and utility of scientific knowledge in
societal pursuits on climate change, environmental issues and socioeconomic development, and,
consequently, to my taking on expert roles as well as interacting with different stakeholders on
knowledge and societal dimensions on climate, environment and sustainable development, including
representing Sweden in the IPCC and in the UNFCCC.
In 2008-2015, I coordinated the Mistra-funded strategic environmental research programme MistraSWECIA that broke new interdisciplinary ground. Since 2000, I have also been the coordinator of the
so-called Strategic Research Area MERGE, when I also became full professor and engaged in PhD
supervision, Lund University’s climate and sustainability platforms and the European Knowledge and
Innovation Community Climate-KIC created by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
Over the years, I have had rich contacts with research funding agencies via applying for, executing,
and evaluating projects, as well as via collaborative efforts between governmental agencies. In my
personal capacity, I have served in international expert groups, chaired evaluation boards, evaluated
several hundreds of project applications and assessed candidates for various positions or degrees.
I have contributed to scientific knowledge assessments of the IPCC between 2001 and 2013, with
various roles. I am currently part of the UNEP’s GEO-6 author team. I have also authored reports to
the Swedish Government and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
In addition to reviewing manuscripts for scientific journals, I have evaluated research applications
and progress for research funding and managing agencies, including the Swedish Research Council
for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas), the Swedish Research Council,
the Swedish Energy Agency, the Academy of Finland, the Research Council of Norway, the
Norwegian infrastructure for Computational Science (NOTUR), the Swedish Agency for International
Development Cooperation (Sida), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the
European Commission (EC), the European Research Council (ERC), the Austrian Science Fund
(FWF), Rannis (Iceland), Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO), the national aeronautics and space
research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany (DLR), the Czech Science Foundation, the
Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA, US) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) of the UK. In some instances, I
chaired the evaluation panel.
