Writing Algebraic Expressions and Equations
Algebraic expressions must have: 1) variable, 2) operation symbol, 3) most have numbers
Phrases that indicate:
Addition – more than, sum of, plus, increased by, total of
With addition, order does not matter
Subtraction – subtracted from, minus, less than, decreased by, difference of
With subtraction, order does matter
Example: 4 less than a number must be written as h – 4
Multiplication – multiplied by, times, product of, twice, doubled
With multiplication, number is written in front of letter. No x for times!
Example: the product of k and 9 must be written 9k (we are not dogs!)
Division – divided by, quotient of, half
With division, order does matter. May write as a fraction or using ÷
Algebraic Equations must have: 1) variables, 2) operation symbols, 3) most have
numbers, 4) equals sign
The word “is” indicates where the equals sign is located
Example: Three more than 8 times as many trees is 75 trees.
8t + 3 = 75
