Chemical Reactions Part II
3. Single Displacement Reactions
-reaction of an element and a compound to produce a new compound
ex. AB + C --> AC + B
solid zinc in lead (II nitrate solution will give you solid lead and aqueous zinc nitrate
Zn(s) + Ph(NO3)2(aq) --> Zn(NO3)2 (aq)
4. Double Displacement Reactions
- a chemical reaction in which two compounds in aqueous solution react to form two new
copounds
ex. AB + CD --> AD + CB
aqueous silver nitrate + aqueous calcium chloride --> solid silver chromate + aqueous calcium
nitrate
2 AgNO3(aq) + CaCl2(aq) --> 2 AgCl(s) + Ca(NO3)2 (aq)
precipitate
-a solid that forms as a result of a chemical reaction between two aqueous solutions
solubility rules
BUT…how do we know when something will react with something else?

UNIT 1 PORTFOLIO
Predicting The Products
For each problem presented below, determine the chemical formula for each reactant,
predict the products and then balance the chemical equation. Include the state of each
reactant and each product.
1. ammonium hydroxide (aq) + hydrochloric acid (aq) 
2. potassium chromate (aq) + barium nitrate (aq) 
3. copper metal + silver nitrate in solution 
4. aluminum chloride and zinc sulphate are dissolved in water to
give …
5. ammonia gas + oxygen gas react to give nitrogen (II) oxide and …
