The Codon Chart The codon chart contains all the possible combinations of RNA codons and the amino acids that will be added based on that code. This is how it works. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Take the DNA code you are given. Convert it to the RNA code using the base pairing rule. Locate the first base of the RNA codon on the left of the chart. Locate the second base of the RNA codon on the top of the chart. Locate the third base of the RNA codon on the right of the chart. The intersection of these three bases will tell you what amino acid that codon codes for. For example, if you were given the codon AGA, you can see from the table that these RNA bases code for the amino acid arginine. Try this – the RNA codon AAA codes for the amino acid _________________________. How about the RNA codon GAU? _______________________________ U C A G U Phenylalanine Phynylalanine Leucine Leucine Leucine Leucine Leucine Leucine Isoleucine Isoleucine Isoleucine Methionine Valine Valine Valine Valine CODON CHART (based on the code in RNA) C A Serine Tyrosine Serine Tyrosine Serine Stop Codon Serine Stop Codon Proline Histidine Proline Histidine Proline Glutamine Proline Glutamine Threonine Asparagine Threonine Asparagine Threonine Lysine Threonine Lysine Alanine Aspartic Acid Alanine Aspartic Acid Alanine Glutamic Acid Alanine Glutamic Acid G Cysteine Cysteine Stop Codon Tryptophan Arginine Arginine Arginine Arginine Serine Serine Arginine Arginine Glycine Glycine Glycine Glycine U C A G U C A G U C A G U C A G
