Organic Compounds
Biochemistry - study of chemical substances, reactions, and processes of
living things
Organic Molecules are the chemicals of life, compounds composed of more
than one type of element, that are found in, and produced by, living
organisms.
Organic – compounds that contain the carbon – hydrogen bond(s)
Inorganic – compounds that DO NOT contain carbon –
hydrogen bond
Carbohydrates - composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen
Major source of energy
Materials for cell parts
Simple carbohydrates = sugars (glucose, fructose, maltrose, suctrose)
Complex carbohydrates = fiber and starch
Lipids (Fats) -
composed of carbon hydrogen, and oxygen
High-energy nutrient, stores energy
Insulates body, cell membrane, protect organs
Unsaturated Fats = cooking oils, some seafood
Saturated Fats = animal products, dairy products (butter, milk etc.)
Proteins - contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and Nitrogen
Needed for tissue growth and repair
Used for chemical reactions in the body
Last resort source of energy
Complete Proteins = from animals (meat, eggs etc.)
Incomplete Proteins = from plants (beans, grains, nuts etc.)
Nucleic Acids – found in all cells, contains hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and
phosphorus
Make up DNA
Chromosomes, Nucleus, Mitochondria, Chloroplasts
