Rules for Adding and Subtracting Integers
An integer is a positive or negative whole number including the number 0.
For Example: -178, 35, 0, -999 are integers
2.5, -3.7, 0.75, ½ are not integers
Same Sign

1. Cover up the Signs and

-3+(-5)= -8
2. Keep the Same Sign.
Different Signs

Cover up the Signs and
Subtract the smaller
number from the larger
number
2. Keep the Sign of the
larger Absolute Value
Change it into an addition problem!
Subtraction
1. Add the Opposite
Subtraction Examples
-2-(-3)= -2+3 = 1
-18 – (-3) = -18 + 3 = -15
7 – 5 = 7 + (-5) = 2
10 – 19 = 10 + (-19) = -9
2. Follow the Addition Rules
Unlike Signs
2+(-7) = -5
-3+5= 2
-17+8= -9
