Directions: On separate sheet(s) of paper, sketch a picture of the problem situation, setup your
trigonometric function for finding the answer. Then use your calculator to find the answer and
circle or box your answer. Please work the problems in order and provide all work as neatly as
possible. 50 points
1. A television camera in a blimp is focused on a football field with angle of depression 2548' .
A range finder on the blimp determines that the field is 925 m away. How high up is the blimp?
2. The arms of a compass are each 12.5 cm long and their ends are 6.5 cm apart. Find the angle
between them.
3. Kim and Luis are in line with a 50-foot flagpole but on opposite sides of it. The angles of
elevation of the top of the pole from their positions are 45º and 33º. How far apart are they?
4. A kite string is 90 m long and makes a 48º angle with the horizontal. Find the altitude of the kite
to the nearest meter.
5. From a ship traveling along the east coast of Maine on a course of 33º, the navigator sights a
lighthouse. The line of sight to the lighthouse forms a right angle with the ship’s line of travel.
Find the bearing of the lighthouse. ***Bearing is the angle formed from North to the line of sight
from the ship to the lighthouse.
6. A ship sails due south for 200 km, then due east for 50 km. What are the distance AND
bearing of the starting point from the ship.
7. A plane is in line with a 1200m landing strip. The pilot measures the angles of depression of
the ends of the strip to be 15.8º and 11.5º. How high up is the plane AND how far is it
horizontally from the nearer end of the strip?
8. The angle of elevation from a point on level ground to the top of a tower 4020' . The angle of
elevation of the top of the tower from a point 164 feet further back on the same horizontal line
is 2210' . Find the height of the tower.
9. A surveying crew is given the job of measuring the height of a mountain. From a point on level
ground, they measure of an angle of elevation to the top of the mountain to be 21°. They move
507 meters closer and find the angle is now 36°. How high is the mountain?
10. A ship is just off the shore of New York City. A sighting is taken of the Statue of Liberty, which
is about 305 feet tall. If the angle of elevation to the top of the statue of is 24°, how far is the
ship from the statue?
