L’Imparfait
Usage: past, describes an action in the
past that happened often, describes a
state or condition. Was/were + “ing”
form of the verb.
Formation:
Nous form, present tense, drop “ons”,
add: ais, ais,ait, ion,iez, aient
Only irregular : être =
j’étais
nous étions
tu étais
il était
vous étiez
ils étaient
Le Passé Composé
Usage: past, an action completed in the
past, happened once.
j’ai joué = I played, I did play, I have played
Formation:
Use the helping verb + past participle
(avoir/être)
ER: jouer = joué
IR: finir = fini
RE : vendre = vendu

Agreement: past participle agrees with the subject when using
vandertramp and reflexive verbs *
Le Futur
Usage: describes something that will
take place in the future.
Je jouerai = I will play
Formation:
Avoir endings added to the infinitive
ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont
List the verbs with irregular stems in
the futur:
* Remember that “boot” verbs that add an accent or change
spelling make the same change in the future
Le Conditionnel
Usage: something that would happen.
Used with “si” clauses frequently.
Je jouerais = I would play
Formation:
Uses the same stem as the futur.
Endings: ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient

Le Subjonctif
Usage: present tense action ( subjunctive
“mood”) Used with a verb(regular présent
tense) that requires the subjunctive + que + a
change in subject from the 1st part of the
sentence.
…que je joue…
Formation:
Regular verbs : drop « ent » from ils
form of the present tense. Add :
e, es, e, ions, iez, ent
Irregular verbs: for “boot” verbs- if the verb is a boot verb
the change will still happen, only in the boot, in the subjunctive.
Nous/vous form will follow the infinitive.
List totally irregular verbs
* refer to notes for expressions that require the use of
the subjunctive
Le Participe présent
Usage: not a tense, “ing” form of the
verb
en jouant
Formation:
Nous form, present tense, drop “ons”,
add: ant. Place “en” before verb
Exceptions: avoir = en ayant
savoir = en sachant
être = en étant
