Middle Ages Unit Study Guide 1. Understand the reasons for and the function of the government system of Feudalism found throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Include lord, fief, vassal, manor, serf 2. Understand how the Holy Roman Empire was created and came to dominate Central Europe, including the Franks, Charles Martel, Charlemagne, the Carolingian Dynasty, the defense of the Catholic Church, and the crowning of the first Holy Roman Emperor. 3. Understand how the Roman Catholic Church became the dominant force throughout Europe including Clovis recognition of Christianity, Pope Gregory’s involvement in politics, the introduction of missionaries and friars, Pope Leo III and Charlemagne, Otto I and lay investiture, the conflict between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV, Canossa, the Concordat of Worms, and The Crusades. 4. Understand the technical and economic advances during the Middle Ages including specialization of jobs, guilds, the rise of the middle class, the rise of the merchant class, advancement of trade, the burghers, the three-field system, and the commercial revolution 5. Understand how the black death or plague destroyed the feudal system and brought about the rise of the middle class and large nations 6. Understand how the conflict between England and France arose including William the Conqueror, the Norman Conquest, conflict between Henry V and Charles VI, Joan of Arc, Charles VII and Henry VI. 7. Understand how non-royalty began to have more rights and control over their own laws in England including Henry III, English Common Law, Circuit Courts, trial by jury, King John, and the Magna Carta.
