Mitosis “Cells Alive!”
In this internet lesson, you will review the steps of mitosis and view video simulations of cell division. You will also
view an onion root tip and calculate the percentage of cells at each of the stages of cell division.
Mitosis Tutorial: SELECT THE LINK below. Follow the directions as you move through the website.



On the left side of the screen is a navigation bar, click on the link to “MITOSIS”
Read the text on this page and view the animation. You can slow down the video by clicking step by step
through the phases.
1. List the stages of mitosis. (PMAT)

2. At which stage does each of the following occur?
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes. ______________________________________________________
Chromosomes align in center of cell.
__________________________________________________________
Longest part of the cell cycle.
__________________________________________________________
Nuclear envelope breaks down. ___________________________________________________________
Cell is cleaved into two new daughter cells. _____________________________________________________
Daughter chromosomes arrive at the poles. _____________________________________________________
Watch the video carefully.
3. The colored chromosomes represent chromatids. There are two of each color because one is an exact duplicate of
the other.
a. How many chromosomes are visible at the beginning of mitosis?__________________________
b. How many are in each daughter cell at the end of mitosis? _______________________________
c. The little green T shaped things on the cell are ________________________________
d.
What happens to the centrioles during mitosis? _________________________________________
4. Identify the stages of these cells and write them on the lines below the pictures.

This page is a summary of the five phases of mitosis. Read it and click “next.”
In this activity, you will be presented with cells from the tip of an onion root. You will classify each cell based on what
phase it is in. At the end you will count up the cells found in each phase and use those numbers to predict how much
time a dividing cell spends in each phase. You can base your calculation on a total cell cycle of 24 hours.
You can enter data in this table as you go along, or at the end of the activity.

Did you forget a calculator? No problem. Go to www.calculator.com and click on the “fractions” calculator. A
window with a virtual calculator will open and you can do the math from there.

Plant Cells in Mitosis
Label the stages of the cell cycle & mitosis. LABEL and COLOR the stages in the plant cell and animal cell. The stages
should be colored as follows --- interphase-pink, prophase-light green, metaphase-red, anaphase-light blue, and telophase-yellow.
Also label the CENTRIOLES, SPINDLE FIBERS, CENTROMERE, and CHROMOSOMES.
