Political and Diplomatic Travel:
Contact between the Mongols and Europeans intensified after the Mongols attacked the
Islamic regions. The pope began to contemplate an alliance between the Mongols and
the Europeans to defeat the Muslims, so he sent envoys to suggest the idea to the
Mongols – who rejected it and proposed instead that the Europeans surrender
immediately.
