Name/Type of Illegal Drug: Hallucinogens
A: Key Idea:
Group of drugs that interfere with the senses and cause hallucinations. Also, known as
psychedelic drugs: imagined experience that seems real.

B. Harmful Effects
i.
Increased heart rate and blood pressure, tremors and nausea

Alter perceptions of reality, time and environment, intensity mood,
and cause rapid mood swings

Causes flashbacks: a vivid memory of a hallucination.

Regular use may develop a tolerance
v.
Impair reasoning and judgment and slow reaction time.

2. Examples
a. LSD: Acid, doses, beast, Lucy, Diamonds, tabs, trips. Drug can be swallowed, sniffed or can
dissolve under tongue. Illegal. Pupils dilate, skin becomes flushed, heart rate and
temperature increase-“bad trip”
b. PCP: Angel dust, dust. Smoked, swallowed or sniffed. Illegal. Restlessness, disorientation,
anxiousness, anger, aggression, feelings of invincibility.
c. Psilocybin: Mushrooms, shrooms. Eaten/illegal. Increased blood pressure and heart rate,
dizziness, anxiety, also experience “bad trips”.
d. MDMA: Ecstasy, XTC. Swallowed, sniffed, or injected/illegal. Acts as a stimulant and cause
brain damage, similar to LSD.
