EAST BEECHBORO PRIMARY OPERATIONAL PLAN NUMERACY 2 to 3 2015
November 14th
2014
Numeracy is the ability to effectively apply Mathematics in everyday recreational and civic life and is vital to the quality of participation in
Society.
Beliefs About Mathematical Learning
At EBPS we believe that students optimise Mathematical learning when
 There is a consistent whole school approach that reflects a sequential, developmental, inclusive learning across the phases of learning; taking into account all
learning needs abilities and styles.
 Students construct their own mathematical knowledge, they participate in inquiry based, contextual, challenging, purposeful and engaging experiences where
explicit teaching of focus concepts have served to underpin these experiences.
 The learning environment promotes risk taking and embraces mistakes as learning opportunities.
 The link between learning at school and home is promoted.
School Priority
To improve student performance in Number with a focus on Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

Strategies / Actions
Teachers plan using First Steps In Maths strategies.
Numeracy teaching in a daily Numeracy Block.
Number and Algebra
Target setting in Number and Algebra established at
the beginning of each term.
Classroom teachers to:
 Deliver, review and plan for all students using a variety
of Formative and Summative Assessments.
 Deliver, review and plan for all students , using NAPLAN
testing
 Refer to the Western Australian Curriculum and the
Australian Curriculum to inform content planning.
 Moderation using Achievement Standards through common
assessment tasks in Year groups each term.
 Use daily practise of number facts. (e.g. facts to 10, facts to
20, skip counting, Times Tables)
 Use the language of Number and Algebra
 Use explicit teaching of calculating and computation
strategies
 Use a variety of experiences to teach Number and
Algebra(e.g. hands on, concrete, semi-concrete, abstract)
 Use environmental print to support learning.
 Use daily maths warm-ups
 Use of open-ended tasks to promote investigation and
problem solving.
 Utilise repetitive practise
 Use sequential planning
 Promote the importance of using reasonable estimations

Classroom teachers to:
 Use explicit use of topics specific language.
 Use appropriate tools and equipment correctly.
 Utilise skills relating back to real life.
 Use sequential planning.
 Use environmental print.
 Using estimation should be a part of all measurement tasks.
 Use explicit teaching of comparing and ordering in
measurement concepts.
 Use of classroom calendar for incidental teaching.
 Use Integration of technology.
 Use free play and direct instruction.
 Use collaborative group work.
Mathletics program.
 Students undertake regular (daily) sessions on Mathletics
programme set by classroom teachers.
Year 3 NAPLAN Assessment to be delivered to Year 2s in
September/October 2014.
Continue to effectively use resources to help “At Risk” students.
