Objectives: Organic Chemistry (Chapter 20)
1. Define and describe the terms tetrahedron, hydrocarbon, covalent bond, straight chain,
branched chain, saturated hydrocarbon, and an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
2. Define organic chemistry and list 5 examples of everyday applications.
3. Classify hydrocarbons as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.
4. Name alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes of carbons 1-10.
5. Draw structural isomers of alkanes.
6. Draw electron dot, structural formulas, condensed formulas, and molecular formulas of
alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.
7. Compare the boiling points of alkanes and their branched isomers.
8. Describe the uses of methane, ethane, propane, butane, isopropyl alcohol, and ethanol.
9. Describe and define petroleum and natural gas.
10. Identify these functional groups by name and formula: alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic
acids, esters, and ethers. You will be given the general form for all and the naming method for
ethers, aldehydes, and ketones.
11. Identify and describe a benzene ring.
12. Describe plastics, polymers, monomers, crosslinking, and the polymerization reaction.
13. Write the reaction for combustion of a hydrocarbon.
14. Write an esterification reaction using both structures and names.
