RAYMIE E. McKERROW CURRICULUM VITAE Raymie E. McKerrow is the Charles E. Zumkehr Professor in the School of Communication Studies, and Affiliate Faculty in Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University. He earned his B. S. in Speech at Southern Illinois University, an M. A. at Colorado State University, and his Ph. D. in Speech Communication at the University of Iowa. His early research extended his dissertation research on Archbishop Whately’s rhetoric, along with other work focusing on Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century rhetorical history and theory. He also has contributed work in argument theory, most recently as a respondent to papers presented at the Ontario Society for the Study of Argument Conferences. Since the mid 1980’s his work has focused on contemporary rhetoric, drawing on the ‘ideological turn’ in rhetorical theory/criticism, with primary attention on what has become known as “critical rhetoric.” In reworking and advancing the arguments contained in early work between 1984 and 1989, he has published on issues such as space and time, the nature of the subject, and corporeal rhetoric. After three years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he moved to the University of Maine, Orono where he served as Department Chair, Associate Dean in Arts and Sciences, Student Academic Services Coordinator, and Fall Orientation Coordinator. In 1995, he moved to the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. He has served as Associate Dean and Interim Associate Provost for Graduate Studies, and as Director of the McNair Scholars program. He currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in contemporary rhetoric, feminist rhetoric, and an undergraduate course in training and development. While at Maine he directed MA theses and served on numerous MA committees. At Ohio University, he has directed 12 MA committees, 21 doctoral dissertations, and served on 29 doctoral committees. He currently directs 9 and serves on another 8 committees in progress. He also serves as liaison for the School’s collaborative doctoral program with Bangkok University. He has served as Vice President and President of the Eastern Communication Association and as Vice President and President of the National Communication Association. He also has edited Argumentation and Advocacy, Communication Quarterly and the Review of Communication. He currently edits the Quarterly Journal of Speech. He also has served on numerous editorial boards since the early 1980’s. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Critical and Cultural Studies Division, the Douglas Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award, and the Charles H Woolbert Award from NCA, Distinguished Service Awards from the American Forensic Association and the Eastern Communication Association, and had been honored as a Centennial Scholar by ECA, named a Wittenberg Fellow, and a Maine Distinguished Professor.
