Endoscopy Perth Royal Infirmary Student Nurse Welcome/Induction Pack Students Name: Mentors Name: Associate Name: July 2012 p1 Revised//CEB/13/08/15 Introduction Welcome to endoscopy. We want your experience to be both enjoyable and an educationally enriching experience. You will be allocated a Mentor and an Associate Mentor and will be given their names when you phone to check your starting time or on your 1st day on the ward. The Senior Charge Nurse is Josy Carnegie Charge Nurse is Debra Murchie Philosophy of Care Each patient has a right to be provided with a high standard of care in the endoscopy unit. They shall at all times be treated with respect and dignity and have a right to refuse treatment if they wish. (There are some exceptions to this under the mental health act and in cases concerning patients with incapacity to consent. In these circumstances other trust policies should be adhered to.) The individual needs of the patient will be assessed by medical and nursing staff and the appropriate individualised care implemented and evaluated. Every effort will be made to maintain the individual’s autonomy and independence. Information health promotion and support services are available and will be utilised to provide on-going care for the individual, prior to and following discharge. It remains the nurse’s responsibility to keep their knowledge and skills up-dated and provide support to other members of the unit team and have an active involvement in a teaching programme and promotion of health. 2 2 Overview of clients being dealt with Adult clients requiring diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. We care for outpatients and inpatients undergoing gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. We carry out banding of oesophageal varices and haemorrhoids, polypectomy and peg insertion. Type of experience which may be gained from this placement: Endoscopy can offer experience in the management, delivery and evaluation of care to clients requiring the above procedures. Including: Pre Procedure assessment Pre and Post Procedure care Monitoring of patients Recovery of sedated patients Multi disciplinary team working. Special knowledge and information which would be useful to the student Clinical skills that can be gained: o Endoscopy offers opportunities to learn new and improve many clinical skills which will be transferable across all areas of adult nursing. 3 Transferable Skills Measurement and recording of systemic observations including blood pressure, pulse oximetry and blood glucose testing and recording Documentation Specialist skills Pre and post procedural care of patients Nursing assessment in a technical environment Decontamination procedures Drug administration (intravenous) Learning Opportunities Available You will develop an understanding of the management of a patient requiring diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy. You will have the opportunity to observe new and innovative practice. Work alongside the multidisciplinary team to effect nursing intervention, management and evaluation. You will be involved with cross departmental co-operation with the wards and x-ray. You will be involved with the safe recovery and discharge of sedated patients. This will include assisting with assessing patients as part of systematic observations of patients in relation to their clinical state, liaising with ward staff and endoscopy staff as appropriate. You will gain an understanding into the physical and psychological aspects and needs of patients undergoing procedures. You will learn how to prepare an endoscopy room for patients and assist with the endoscopy list. You will develop an understanding of the most common medicines used within this area. There are a great many opportunities for you to gain the experience and practical skills towards completing the required competencies for this placement. As a student nurse you will be guided in many areas, but you will also be expected to show enthusiasm, initiative and interest. We expect to be asked questions and will endeavour to answer them appropriately. However, as an adult learner, we may nudge you in the right direction and get you to discover the answers for yourself. You will be allocated a mentor and an associate mentor. Throughout your time with us they will provide ongoing constructive feedback as to your progress. It will also be their responsibility to carry out your midway and final assessments. This will involve their liaising with all members of the team whom you have come into contact with. Aims during Placement To develop clinical, managerial and personal skills, utilising research skills to demonstrate how they can be used to enhance nursing practice and therefore improve patient care. 5 Objectives At the end of this placement the student will have met the required competencies. The student will have demonstrated that they can effectively manage their time and prioritise their workload. The student will have had the opportunity to plan and assess care with their mentor and other team members. The student will reflect on the care that they have provided during their placement. The student will have liaised and worked with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
