Practicing Genetic Terminology
1. Mendel also studied the shape of peas in his experiments. He knew that peas could have
either one of two shapes: Round or Wrinkled.
 Having round seeds is a DOMINANT over wrinkled seed. What allele (letter)can we
use to represent the trait for round seeds? R
 Therefore, wrinkled seeds is the RECESSIVE trait. What allele (letter)can we use to
represent the trait for wrinkled seeds? r
2. Recall that an organism’s phenotype is what it looks like. Identify each plant’s
phenotype as Round or Wrinkled.
 Rr - round
 RR -round
 rr –wrinkled
3. Recall that an organism’s genotype is its combination of alleles. Write the
genotype for each plant below.
 Homozygous for Round seeds –RR
 Homozygous for Wrinkled Seeds –rr
 Heterozygous for Round Seeds -Rr
4. Explain what a dominant allele is?
An allele that stands out or appears whenever it is present and
covers a recessive allele
5. Explain what a recessive allele is?
An allele that is masked by a dominant allele, and shows when no dominant allele is
present.
6. You inherit several traits from your parents. One example is eye color. Explain
how you would inherit the trait of eye color using the word “allele.”
You inherit one allele from each parent, so each parent will give you an allele that
codes for the protein which results in that trait. The alleles may be dominant or
recessive.
