Essential Learning Outcomes
By the end of the year the learner (through varying levels of
sophistication) will be able to:
1. distinguish between social, political, economic, and cultural developments
in civilizations during the following time periods: ancient civilizations (8000
B.C.E.- 1000 B.C.E.), classical era (1000 B.C.E.- 600 C. E.), post classical
era (600 C.E.-1450), era of globalization (1450-1750), modern era (17501914), and the contemporary world (1914-present).
2. compare and contrast gender roles among civilizations during specific
eras up through the contemporary world.
3. evaluate how artistic works reflect aspects of civilizations during specific
eras up through the contemporary world.
4. identify required primary and secondary source information found through
research with an appropriate citation format.
5. write about historical developments using organization of ideas, accurate
evidence, and depth of thought.
6. determine the effects of economic development on global interactions.
7. identify how technology and demographic changes affect people and the
environment.
8. compare and contrast the development, spread, and ideas of major world
religions.
9. distinguish between types of political organizations and trace changes in
those political organizations.
10. identify mathematical, scientific, architectural, and artistic achievements of
specific civilizations up through the contemporary world.
11. identify significant individuals throughout history and understand how they
impacted historical events, politics, and society.
12. analyze and/or create maps, graphs, charts, models, and databases
representing various aspects of world history.
13. communicate in written, oral, and visual forms by using social studies
terminology correctly, and standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure,
and punctuation.
14. analyze the effects of physical and human geography on major
developments in world history.
