Directions: Show all work for complete credit. The questions are also in your textbook. This test
is work a total of 10 points towards your final grade. See homework grading rubric for grading
guidelines. Due . Late work not accepted.
Section 3.4
1. Problem 10:
Use the function f (x) = x3 − 2x2 − 11x + 12
(a) List all possible rational zeros.
(b) Use synthetic division to test the possible rational zeros and find an actual zero.
(c) Use the quotient from part (b) to find the remaining zeros of the polynomial function.
2. Problem 40:
Find all zeros of the polynomial function f (x) = x3 + 12x2 + 21x + 10. Use the Rational Zero
Theorem and Descartes’s Rule of Signs.
3. Problem 46:
Solve the polynomial equation x4 − x3 + 2x2 − 4x − 8 = 0. Use the Rational Zero Theorem and
Descartes’s Rule of Signs.
Section 3.5
4. Problem 24:
Find the vertical asymptotes, if any, and the values of x corresponding to holes, if any, of the
graph of each rational function.
x+3
g(x) =
x(x − 3)
5. Problem 38:
Find the horizontal asymptote, if there is one, of the graph of each rational function.
f (x) =
15x
3x2 + 1
