The Electron Cloud
Area surrounding the
nucleus.
Contains the electrons.
Does NOT contain the
nucleus.
The Questions
What makes atoms “be” different elements?
What is the “atomic number” and what does
it tell us?
What is the “atomic mass” and what does it
tell us?
What does the periodic table tell us?
How atoms of various elements
are different?
Element: a specific atom or group of atoms
that all have the same number of protons.
Atoms of different elements contain
different numbers of protons in their
nuclei.
How atoms of various elements
are different?
Atomic Number: The number of protons in
an atom.
Atomic Mass or Mass Number: The
number of protons plus the number of
neutrons in an atom.
Reading the Map
Key Information
1. Atomic #
= # of Protons
2. Atomic Mass
= (# of Protons) + (# of Neutrons)
3. # of Neutrons = (Atomic Mass) – (Atomic #)
4. #of Electrons
= #of Protons (in a neutral atom)
5. Change the #of Protons, you change the Element!!
6. Change the #of Neutrons, you change the Isotope.
7. Change the # of Electrons, you change the Ion.
Using the Map to Solve Problems
How many protons and how many neutrons are in an
aluminum atom that has an atomic number of 13 and a
mass number of 27?

Atomic Number is the same thing as the number of
Protons, so 13 Protons.
Atomic Mass – Atomic Number = Neutrons

The Answers
What makes atoms “be” different elements?
 The number of protons in an atom determines what element
we call that atom.
What is the “atomic number” and what does it tell us?
 The atomic number tells us the number of protons in an atom
and determines the element.
What is the “atomic mass” and what does it tell us?
 The atomic mass or mass number tells us the number of
protons and neutrons in an atom.
What does the periodic table tell us?
 Many things including the atomic number and atomic mass of
the elements.
