Describe the projeci goals and objectives and the extent to which you been successful in
achieving these.
Together with playwright Adam Kraar I am developing a new play about the American modem dancer
Isadora Duncan's 1921 marriage to Russian poet Sergei Esenin and her "Russian years". The purpose of
this trip was to meet and observe training with Jeanne Bresciani (the Isadora Duncan Intemational
Institute) and Lori Belilove (the Isadora Duncan Foundation), work with Adam Kraar on the final edition
of the play and stage two public play readings with a cast of four actors. I'm considering this project
successful since a complete text of the play was compiled and ready for the production in 2014, two
public readings attracted an audience ofapproximately sixty and Lisa Channer was able to perform
successfully two Duncan's dances.
Discuss the outcomes and benefits of the poect. Specifically comment on how the poect has
moved you towards the peer-reviewed dissemination of your work or the submission of a
proposal for external funding. lnclude a copy of any published material, if applicable.
In the process ofworking on this project I was networking and collabomting with professional colleagues
Iiom the Twin Cities and New York. Since this project is bilingual and speaks about relations between
Russian and American culture, this project attracted the attention oftheatre professionals interested in
international cultural projects between Russia and America. Afler compleating ofthis project I had a
conversations with such organization as The Russian American Cultural Center, New York and Lark Play
Development Center, New York. Both ofthese organization express an interest in this project. Jeanne
Bresciani became a big suppo(er of this work and creative parthner in the future development of
performance. All these connections and positive responces will help in my search for extemal funding for
the production in 2014 both in Minnesota and New York. I'm expecting receive written responses to our
performance by Jeanne Bresciani and Elena Kuzina, University of Minnesota (Fulbright Visiting Scholar
Ilom Russia), as well as possible publication in the Slavic and East European Performance joumal.

A brief, tempestuous marriage during a turbulent time lies at the
heart of the new play, "Dancing on the Edge."

The location is Russia, the time, the years following the Russian
Revolution. The couple: legendary American dancer lsadora
Duncan and brilliant young Russian poet, Sergei Esenin.
"She had vowed never to marry," said Lisa Channer, who will portray Duncan at a staged
reading of the new work at Unison Learning Center in New Paltz on Sunday evening. "She
thought it was bad for women."
It
was Duncan's only marriage, although she had affairs and gave birth to children with other
men.
For the last few days, Channer has been immersed in Duncan's work, life and spirit at the
lsadora Duncan lnternational lnstitute in High Falls. A trained dancer in both ballet and
modern dance, Channer has been working with Jeanne Bresciani, Ph.D., the institute's
artistic director and director of education.
Eventually, dance will play a vital role in the play, but it's still not certain how much of it will
be included in the staged reading.
Either way, Channer said, she intends to integrate Duncan's choreography "internally" as
she brings the dance pioneer to life on the Unison stage.
Channer is an associate professor in the Department of Theater and Dance at Minnesota
University in Minneapolis. She grew up in New Paltz and was a student in the Department of
Theatre Arts at the State University of New York there. Several years ago, she was named a
Fulbright Scholar, which allowed her to research and teach theater in St. Petersburg,
Russia.
With the Russian director Vladimir Rovinsky, she is co-founder of Theatre Novi Most (in

Russia. "Dancing on the Edge," by New York playwright Adam Ktaat, is a project of that
theater and is directed by Rovinsky.
The play features many characters, but has a cast of only four: Channer as Duncan, Sasha
Andreev as Esenin, and Sergey Nagorny and Aleksandra Glinka who play everybody else.
