Niche = the role of a species in a specific area 1. fundamental niche = the potential space that could be used by a species 2. realized niche = part of the fundamental niche that is actually used by a species B. Habitat = the place where a group of animals live 1. population = a group of the same species 2. community = the many different species that live in a habitat C. Ecosystem = the community of species and the physical features in the area 1. biotic features = the living parts of the ecosystem -­‐ biodiversity = the variety of living things -­‐ flora = the plants -­‐
fauna = the animals 2. abiotic features = the nonliving parts of the ecosystem -­‐ water, soil, air 3. Primary succession = succession that occurs where no species existed before -­‐ pioneer species = first species to enter an area 4. secondary succession= succession in areas that have established species
