Synopsis
BIODIVERSITY AND ECOLOGICAL STABILITY
The living organisms are a gift of Nature to be exploited gainfully for the benefit, progress and
prosperity of humanity. Our survival on this planet depends on their existence. The Earth, as
far as we know of today, is the only planet where life is into existence. This planet has evolved
through many stages through initially it was lifeless. Today, the Conservation of Biodiversity
has become one of the greatest challenges for humanity.
The term Biodiversity in actual fact
refers to the Species diversity, genetic diversity as also the Ecosystem diversity, and unless we
preserve all the three, we cannot succeed in conserving Biodiversity. The various components
of 111yriadsof life forms can be referred to as separate species, but all of these are inter-related
and integrated into a close-knit "Web of life" and the loss of any component will affect the
entire chain of life. The various animals have been recognized and classified into groups
depl~nd ing upon their structural
similarities
and differences
which represent
the actual
relationships among them. Each animal group may be small or large one. For instance, the
insects comprise nearly 80(1<,
of animal groups put together, but all species and all groups are
equally important, some less more. During the last few decades the human population explosion has become an important factor in relation to the loss of Biodiversity. This has resulted
into destruction of many habitats and led to the extinction of precious species diversity. The
evolution and extinction of species are concurrent phenomena, which proceed hand in hand.
Some species are losing out their race for survival while the others keep going as also evolving
side by side. This has jeopardized the various ongoing life processes. The levels of pollution
has been rising at an alarming rate threatening the existence of human beings themselves.
In order to save our own existence we have to save ot1)er forms of life, i.e. Biodiversity as also
the Ecosystems which thE~yinhabit.
We certainly cannot and should not fail in our efforts;
otherwise it would be a great disaster.
prisline glory.
This beauitfulliving
planet must continue with its
The choice is ours and we cerainly cannot afford a failure in our efforts,
otherwise we shall meet our doomsday, much sooner than later.
