KALEV FREEMAN, M.D., PH.D., F.A.C.E.P. UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY GIVEN MEDICAL BUILDING E301, 89 BEAUMONT AVENUE, BURLINGTON, VT 05405 E M A I L : [email protected] PHONE:(802) 656-5848 FAX:(802) 656-0680 WEBPAGE: WWW.UVM.EDU/MEDICINE/FREEMANLAB OVERVIEW My overall goal is to develop an academic research career as a physician-scientist in the area of trauma physiology. My laboratory focuses on understanding the fundamental vascular biology changes that occur following traumatic injuries. We are using a combination of state-ofthe-art approaches from basic science experiments in animal models to clinical studies, to provide an integrated picture of the physiological responses to trauma and identify novel therapeutic targets. I am currently focusing 80% of my effort towards research activities, as part of a 5-year plan for the development of an independent research program. Central to my research work is a Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) from the National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Working with a mentoring committee lead by Dr. Mark Nelson, University Distinguished Professor and Chair of Pharmacology, the award will (1) enhance my technical background by learning state-of-the art vascular biology techniques, including calcium signaling, endothelial function, nitric oxide, and ion channels, (2) elucidate the molecular mechanisms and functional consequences of vascular responses to traumatic brain injury, and (3) provide career mentoring for transition to an independent tenure track position. Additionally, I am collaborating with Dr. Kenneth Mann, Professor of Biochemistry, and Mark Nelson on a collaborative research program to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of coagulopathy in trauma, funded by the Department of Defense and NIH. Finally, 20% of my effort is dedicated to clinical activities as a board-certified Emergency Physician, providing emergency medical services at the University of Vermont/ Fletcher Allen, and teaching medical students and resident physicians.
