A Law and Policy Journal for the (Information) Revolution!
For Students: Why Join I/S?
New information and communication technologies are transforming our economic, social, and
political life. I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society explores that
transformation.

Care about business? We do e-commerce.
Care about crime? We explore cybercrime.
Care about intellectual property? We care about IP rights in cyberspace.
Care about politics? We do e-democracy.
Care about national security? We explore cybersecurity and the impact of new
technologies on both privacy and civil liberties – as in our 2014 “paper symposium” on
the NSA surveillance controversies.
Whatever aspect of law, business, or society you care about, we’re interested in how it intersects
with the digital world.
Each year, I/S stages a major symposium on a hot topic at the intersection of law, policy and
information technology. Recent conference topics include:

Online Consultation and Public Policy Making: Democracy, Identity, and New Media
(2008)
Mashup/Remix (2009)
Youth and Social Media (2010)
Cybersecurity Policy (2011)
The Future of Online Journalism (2012)
Competition and Innovation in the Broadband Age (2013)
Big Data Future (2014)
The selection of I/S articles represents a collaboration between student editors and a
distinguished international editorial board including experts and thought leaders both inside and
outside the academy.
Because the law surrounding new information technologies is mushrooming, lawyers attuned to
the regulatory issues surrounding such technologies will have a huge advantage, whether serving
in government or counseling clients. Our editors have gone on to significant “information age”
legal and business careers, often focused on intellectual property, privacy, or other specialties
where new technologies are driving legal change. I/S also has a long-standing relationship with
the International Association of Privacy Professionals, whose leadership is committed to
facilitating training and education opportunities for students interested in becoming privacy
specialists.
Do you need a science, engineering, or technological background to be a successful I/S member?
No! What you need is intense curiosity about the future and a commitment to helping to publish
exciting new scholarship shedding light on that future.
For Authors: Why Publish in I/S?
I/S is an interdisciplinary journal of research and commentary concentrating on the
intersection of law, policy, and information. Among our first decade’s authors are
communication scholars, computer scientists, economists, engineers, information scientists,
journalists, political scientists, and sociologists, not to mention such leading legal scholars as
Michael Froomkin, Gillian Hadfield, Jay Kesan, Ed Lee, Larry Lessig, Beth Noveck, John
Palfrey, Pam Samuelson, Rebecca Tushnet, Christopher Yoo, and the journal’s founders, Peter
Shane and Peter Swire. We are delighted to receive student-authored submissions, as well as
interdisciplinary manuscripts that faculty create in collaboration with their graduate and
professional students.
I/S publishes three issues a year – typically, a “Symposium Issue,” containing papers
arising from the previous term’s I/S conference, an issue devoted to privacy and cybersecurity
topics, and an issue containing the best of the unsolicited manuscripts we receive on other topics
at the intersection of law, policy, and information, communication and computing technologies.
I/S authors keep their own copyrights, extending to I/S a free, perpetual, nonexclusive
license to publish and republish their work. I/S is included on both Lexis and Westlaw.
I/S is a peer-reviewed journal. Our International Editorial Board includes thought leaders
both within and beyond the academy – including a significant contingent of faculty from
Carnegie Mellon University, whose public policy school – now part of Heinz College – was a
founding co-sponsor of I/S. Authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication and who
choose to publish with I/S receive substantive feedback from members of its distinguished
editorial board, as well as our student board’s assistance in polishing final manuscripts.
Accepted manuscripts may also be posted as “Works in Progress” on the I/S web site
immediately upon agreement to publish with the I/S journal.
