Necrotizing Fasciitis
Know the facts.
What is Necrotizing Fasciitis?
Necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly called “flesh eating bacteria,” is a bacterial
infection that rapidly spreads and kills soft tissue. Although rare, it can be caused by
several different bacteria, most commonly group A strep. Necrotizing fasciitis is most
commonly caused when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin such as a
cut, scrape or burn.
Symptoms
• Pain or soreness
• Fever
• Ulcers, blisters or black spots
• Red or purple swelling
• Chills
• Fatigue
• Severe Pain
• Vomiting
Prevention
Keep open wounds covered until healed, and don’t delay treating even minor wounds
like cuts and scrapes. If you have an open wound avoid public pool areas until it is
healed. Wash hands often using soap and warm water. There is a very low chance of
contracting necrotizing fasciitis, even with close contact with an infected person.
Contact your Medical Provider if:
• you think you may have these symptoms after a wound or,
• infected tissue around the wound is rapidly spreading.
