Short Description
The project aims to develop novel and innovative biomaterials for efficient cancer
therapeutic and diagnostic applications. For such purposes, it is important to develop
multifunctional carrier systems that can harness and combine different mechanisms
synergistically to maximize the therapeutic effects of the delivered drug and gene, and
also impart bioimaging functions to the carriers through incorporating functional
components such as fluorescent and MRI probes, and magnetic or other metal
nanoparticles into the carrier systems. We have recently demonstrated one example of
developing a hybrid nanocarrier system based on quantum dot and supramolecular
self-assembly for co-delivery of chemotherapeutic drug and gene, and also for cellular
imaging. Based on our experience in supramolecular chemistry and polymer
synthesis, the student will have opportunity and freedom to develop novel hybrid
nano-carrier systems and work on their physicochemical characterization and
applications for cancer treatment.
