3. METHODS
Two tests have been designed in order to investigate possibilities for reducing environmental
effects from textile maintenance. First test focuses on whether wool products can be washed
with other fabrics without affecting shrinkage and pilling and the second compares wool with
other fibres and fibre mixes for stain removal and soil repellence .
3.1 Dimensional change and pilling
Laboratory tests were designed in order to study whether woolen products can be washed with
other textile materials without increasing pilling and shrinkage. All textiles were exposed to
standard atmosphere 20° C, 65 % RH for 24 hours. Three samples from each textile were cut,
labeled with specimen number A and B and one reference. The specimens were marked
according to template for dimensional change 500mm x 500mm or 250mm x 200mm
depending on available sample size. The edges were parallel to the length and width of the
fabric. Edges were overlocked to avoid unravels during the test. The length and width
dimensions were determined before washing, after one wash and flat drying and after five
washing cycles and flat drying at the end. Four woven and two knitted pure wool samples
were washed either together with wool or with textiles made of other materials in the same
laundry load. Wool samples labeled A were laundered separately from other fiber types ref.
table 1.Textiles of mixed fibers were laundered together with wool samples labeled B table 2.
Polyester samples, were both washed separately and with the mixed textiles ref table 3. The
mixed textiles were line dried. All wool- and polyester- samples were evaluated, in a viewing
cabinet illuminated by a white fluorescent tube D 65 daylight, for pilling and fuzzing
according to ASTM D 3512 photographic standard after 1st and 5th wash. In addition, woolen
specimens’ dimensional changes were measured according to ISO 5077.

3.2 Stain removal
In order to study wool’s stain removal properties, and to compare wool with other textile
materials, 19 different types of textiles were soiled, washed and evaluated. The soil selected
was; Red wine, coffee, olive oil, hot chocolate, tomato sauce and banana and mango
smoothie. This selection was made because soil containing protein, fats and color dyes are
known to make problematic stains that are difficult to remove in laundering. The chosen
products are known among Norwegian consumers and available in grocery stores. Further
there was a desire for soil that was easy to apply by using a micropipette. All textiles were
white or very light in colour and washed five times before the test in order to remove nondurable finishes. The same specimens used for dimensional change and pilling were used in
this test.
Figure1. The left panel shows soil used in the test and the right panel shows stain applying
Soiling was conducted at 23°C and 55 % RH. The soil was at room temperature 23°C when
applied on the textiles. The test specimens were placed on a smooth horizontal surface with
the face-side up. Small drops of soil, 200 µl were placed carefully on the fabric surface using
a micropipette and a plastic laminated template. See figure 1.

In most cases penetration or wetting and wicking occurred. Some test specimens showed
resistance to wetting indicated by a clear, well-rounded drop with high contact angle. This is
characteristic of a fabric whereby it resists absorption of soil. In this test the aim was to
compare wool with other fibres and fibre mixes due to stain removal. To help the stain to stick
to the fabric, the droplet was carefully stirred with a needle in order to disturb the surface
tension for letting the wetting and wicking occur. This was the case of some wool and
woollen mixture samples, besides for olive oil that was readily absorbed by all fabric types.
The test specimens were line dried overnight and then laundered all together and line dried.
Ref figure 2.
Figure2. The left panel shows line drying after staining and the right panel shows line drying
after laundering
After the first and fifth washing cycle with wool program and detergent, four observers rated
the test specimens independently. Evaluation was performed in a darkened room in a viewing
cabinet illuminated by white fluorescent tube D 65 daylight. The rating took place according
to the following scale:

3.3 Soil repellence
Soil repellence was studied in order to see whether is it possible to get rid of the soiling before
it causes permanent staining. Resistance to wetting and thereby soiling is indicated by a clear,
well-rounded drop with high contact angle, figure 3. This kind of liquid droplets may touch
lightly on the surface and easily roll off before being absorbed into the fabric. This allows
time for liquid spills to be wiped from fabric before they can cause permanent staining. To
investigate this phenomenon, three types of liquid soiling, red wine, coffee and hot chocolate,
that had showed some resistance to wetting in the stain removal test were selected. 22
specimens, included different types of wool, synthetics, silk and fiber mixtures, that were
washed 10 times before the test were soiled. Soiling was conducted at 23°C and 55 % RH the
soil was at room temperature 23°C when applied on the textiles. The test specimens were
placed on a smooth horizontal surface with the face-side up. Small drops of soil, 200 µl, were
placed carefully on the fabric surface using a micropipette. After about 5 seconds, paper
towels were used to wipe and soak up as much of spilled liquids as possible. Two observers
rated the specimens independently according to the procedure described in the stain removal
test.

5. CONCLUSIONS
5.1 Pilling and fuzzing
The results of pilling and fuzzing after five washes were the same for all 6 wool specimens
and 2 polyester specimens: no pilling (grade 5). This was valid independent of whether the
materials were washed together with similar fibers or with other materials. This result would
probably have been different with materials that were more sensitive to pilling. Some fuzzing
was observed, but no significant differences could be found between the two different ways of
washing. Our current research did not show any additional significant danger of pilling or
shrinkage during the first 5 washes. However, more research in these themes is needed with
more varying materials and higher number of washing cycles in order to draw final
conclusions.
5.2 Dimensional change
The high shrinkage results of specimens 18 and 19 indicate that these materials are not very
suitable for machine wash. When the specimens washed with wool and specimens washed
with other materials are compared, we can see that on some materials there is no difference,
whereas on others there are small variations in both ways. If an average value for all
specimens is calculated, it indicates that there is 0.5% higher average shrinkage on specimens
that are washed together with other materials. However, this is within the 95% confidence
limits of the method and therefore not significant.
5.3 Stain removal and soil repellence
The soil repellence results vary greatly between 1 and 4, even within the same fiber type
(wool). Best repellence results are given by pure wool samples 23-25 made of crossbred wool,
followed by 18 and 19, also wool. Worst repellence results can be found among all the fiber
types included in the test, including cotton, synthetics, wool, silk and blends. When it comes
to stain removal results, there was usually less than one grade difference between the
evaluation after the first and fifth wash. Wool had best soil resistance against red wine and
coffee, but if it gets soiled the stain remains visible (Table 6). Synthetic materials in test did
not have good resistance against any of the soils used, but they were easier to get clean than
other materials. Olive oil stains were generally not very visible, and was usually graded
between 4 and 5. The exception was silk, which was graded to 3 after 1st wash, but also got
better after 5 washes. Hot chocolate stains got lighter in wash on wool and synthetics, but
remained quite visible on cotton and silk. However, cotton could be washed more efficiently
and the result would most likely have been different after more suitable washing program and
detergent. Tomato sauce stains remained partly at the surface of the fabric and were quite
visible after the first wash, but significantly improved on all materials after 5 washes.
Also the structure of material was of importance. Woven fabrics had in general higher stain
removal results than knitted fabrics. This may be explained by the denser structure that did
not allow the soils enter in to a same degree as on knitted fabrics. However, soil repellence
properties are easily affected by surface treatments and can therefore be modified for the
different fiber and fabric types.

Soiling of textiles may occur in a number of ways including accidental spillage of liquids,
static attraction of dirt and dust, and re-deposition of soils during laundering. Especially
untreated woolen fabrics showed good soil repellence against water based soils. Goods made
from wool are naturally water repellent. This is because the surface of wool has a very thin
waxy, lipid coating chemically bonded to the surface. However, if the staining occurred it was
more difficult to get wool clean than synthetic fabrics. Cotton materials got even more soiling,
but they tolerate more efficient washing and detergents than wool does.
