Objectives for Chapter 10 and Chapter 11: BLOOD & THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM 1. Know the components of blood and relative quantities of plasma verus formed elements. 2. Know the structure, function, and origin of erythrocytes, granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils), agranulocytes (monocytes and lymphocytes), and thrombocytes (platelets). 3. Know the role of hormones in the control of formed elements in the blood. 4. Describe the hemoglobin molecule, its function and the effects produced by genetic variations of the hemoglobin molecule. 5. Describe the technique and significance of blood typing. 6. Describe the characteristics of cardiac muscle. How does it compare to skeletal muscle? 7. Describe the structure and function of each part of the heart including: the right and left atria, right and left ventricles, semilunar valves, tricuspid and bicuspid valves, chordae tendineae, papillary muscles, pulmonary arteries and veins, inferior and superior vena cava and aorta. 8. Trace the pathway of blood through the heart listing all structures and vessels by name. 9. Describe the structural differences between the left and right ventricles. 10. Describe how the heart sounds are produced. 11. Describe the components of the heart’s conduction system and how the system functions. Explain how the electrocardiogram corresponds to the heart’s electrical and muscular events. 12. Know the layers of the heart wall and the composition of the pericardium. 13. Understand the phases of the cardiac cycle. What happens to the phases when the heart rate increases? 14. Know the definition of the following terms: cardiac output and SV. 15. Know the formula to calculate the cardiac output. Understand the factors which influence the heart rate and stroke volume. 16. Describe the structural and functional differences between arteries (elastic and muscular), capillaries and veins. 17. Describe the distribution of blood in the arteries, capillaries and veins. 18. Explain how blood pressure is controlled including the nervous and hormonal regulation systems. 19. Identify the following vessels on models or diagrams: inferior and superior vena cava, left and right pulmonary arteries and veins, thoracic and abdominal aorta, internal, external and common carotid, subclavian, brachiocephalic, coronary, celiac, renal, axillary, brachial, radial, ulnar, mesenteric, iliac, peroneal, femoral, popliteal, tibial, external and internal jugular, hepatic and saphenous. Know both arteries and veins, if a name pertains to both.
