SAMPLE SPIRITUAL APPLICATION QUESTIONS FOR MATH 1. In order to add and subtract fractions you need a common denominator. a) What are three common denominators God has given to the Christian? Sample Answer: Creation → we all come from Adam and Eve Jesus→ His blood was shed for all of us God’s love→ He loves us all the same b) Choose one of these common denominators and explain how it helps us to see other human beings as equal to ourselves. 2. When solving equations we must maintain a balance between the left side and the right side. (i.e. they must always be equal) a) How is maintaining a balanced equation similar to the application of the golden rule? b) What are three habits we must cultivate in order to maintain a balanced Christian life? 3. Our relationship with God is constantly growing and developing. It can be described as a graph of a linear equation. a) Should we strive for a graph of our relationship with God to look like i) a line with no slope ii) a line with an undefined slope iii) a line with a positive slope iv) a line with a negative slope b) Construct an example of the line you chose in a) and give two reasons for your choice. 4. The distributive property allows us to multiply the numbers and variables we have inside the parentheses with the number or variable outside the parentheses. How can this property be applied to what God expects us to do with our talents? Sample Answer God expects us to share or use our talents. We are not to keep our talents to ourselves (inside the parentheses). Our talents are multiplied when they are shared with others outside of us (multiplied by what is outside the parentheses). Coleen Birkett, [email protected], 2005 1 5. When taking the sum of two negative numbers the end result is another negative number. Choose a Bible character and describe two of their negative behaviors which resulted in a negative outcome or consequence. Sample Answers Samson→ fraternized with the philis nes + told the secret of his strength to Delilah = loss of his strength, his sight, his life, his family Eve→ ate of the forbidden fruit + gave fruit to Adam = sin brought into the world, cast out of the Garden of Eden David→ lusted a er Bathsheba + had her husband killed so he could have her = death to firstborn son 6. Relate the steps in problem solving to how a Christian should seek God’s help in solving a problem. 7. How can we grow exponentially in God’s grace? 8. Relate the concept of multiplying powers with the same base to the experience(s) on the Day of Pentecost. 9. Any number or variable to the exponent of zero is equal to 1. a) How does this explain what an experience with Jesus can do in the life of a Christian? Sample Answers 1. An experience with Jesus heals us spiritually and physically and makes us whole (1). 2. An encounter with Jesus helps us all to live as one. 3. No matter who we are or where we have come from we are all one in Jesus. b) What does a base to the exponent of zero represent spiritually? Sample Answers 1. A human being 2. A repentant sinner 3. An illness Coleen Birkett, [email protected], 2005 2 c) What does the exponent zero represent? Sample Answers 1. The blood of Jesus: Zero is neutral on the number line and the blood of Jesus neutralizes our sin and makes us whole (1). 2. Jesus’ healing touch when we are sick. 10. When factoring polynomials or reducing fractions we look for a common factor that can be removed from each term in order to achieve the simplest form. a) What are some of the common factors that must be removed from the Christian’s life to achieve the simplest form of Christianity? Sample Answers 1. Trying to live a Christian life by our own power. 2. Not fully submitting ourselves to God. 3. Looking for the sins or faults in others. 11. When simplifying expressions or adding polynomials we must combine like terms to arrive at the solution. What are some of the like terms that must be combined in order to live the life God calls us to live. Sample Answers 1. love + joy + peace + longsuffering etc. = living by the fruit of the spirit 2. purity + truth + honesty etc. = a pure heart or the mind of Christ 12. One trigonometric identity states that sin²x + cos²x = 1. Rewrite this identity substituting what God has given us that should always result in 1. Sample Answers 1. husband + wife = 1 2. repentant sinner + Jesus = 1 13. A negative exponent can be made positive by rewriting it as a reciprocal of itself. For example, 4‐2 = 1. How does the Holy Spirit make a negative trait in us into ‐ 4² ‐ something positive? 14. Explain the concept of infinity in terms of God and His love/power. Use one or more Bible text to support your answer. Coleen Birkett, [email protected], 2005 3 15. In Algebra, we find solutions to systems of equations graphically, by substitution and by linear combination. Choose one of these methods and explain relate it to the plan of salvation. Sample Answers 1. Graphically: God met us where we are (point of intersection) by sending Jesus to live as one of us in order to save us. 2. Substitution: Jesus was our substitution. He died in our place that we might be forgiven and given eternal life. 3. Linear Combination: Just as linear combination eliminates one variable, the blood of Jesus eliminates sin from our lives. 16. In Algebra, we not only solve equations but also inequalities. What are some things that can create inequalities in the Christian’s life? Sample Answers 1. Being unequally yoked. 2. Choosing the wrong friends. 3. Neglecting daily prayer and Bible study. 4. Reading and/or listening to degrading material. 17. Describe a Christian experience for each quadrant of the co‐ordinate plane. Your answer must include a labeled co‐ordinate plane. 18. What can the origin of the co‐ordinate plane represent spiritually? 19. When studying functions the input values are called the domain and the output values are known as the range. List some positive traits we can put into the domain and their resulting range values. Sample Answers DOMAIN RANGE Demonstrate love for others Joy/ Inner beauty/Love comes back to us Daily prayer and Bible study A viable relationship with Jesus Coleen Birkett, [email protected], 2005 4
