Introduction:
THE RATIONAL NUMBERS
The set of rational numbers is another subset of the Real numbers like the set of
integers, however, the set is big and dense, and complete….so much so, that it
cannot be written out the way the set of integers are described.
 The set of rational numbers contains all of the integers, and also, fractions.

 Basically, It is the set of all numbers that can be written in terms of a
𝑎
fraction where a and b are integers.
𝑏
 All terminating and repeating decimals can be rewritten as fraction and
therefore are rational numbers.
 Usually, when the word rational numbers come up, it’s best to think of the
numbers entirely as fractions.
 The Real Numbers will be discussed in Chp 1 in greater detail.
Simplify by reducing: (Divide both the “top” and the “bottom” by the GCF!)
