India Market After a constructive April, May 2013 saw Indian equities turning volatile. On macro front a low GDP growth data, INR depreciation due to tapering of monetary stimulus by US FED and local factors like selling from promoters’ to maintain min of 25% public holding as per SEBI’s rule kept markets choppy. The NIFTY depreciated by 3.3% (USD) during May 2013. Most of the decline was accounted by the depreciation of INR against USD. India’s 4QF13 GDP print came at 4.8% yoy, which was slow but in line with expectations. RBI during their meeting on 3 May RBI cut policy rate by another 25 bps to 7.25%, but, maintained a hawkish guidance. Despite some improvement in the macro, INR remained weak and fell to 11 month low as it traded above 56/USD. Key reasons were weaker data on trade deficit and possible tapering of QE by US FED. Relatively defensive sectors like Healthcare and Consumer Staples continued to do well. Industrial sector was the worst performer as a key company disappointed with their result. Falling INR weighed on a key index stock in the telecom sector (as the company has large borrowing in USD) making the sector second worst performer in the index. Foreign investors continued to buy Indian equities. For the month of May 2013, net buying was $3.8 B. This took YTD buying to $15.2 B in 5 months. Domestic institutions on the other hand continued to sell. Their net selling for May 2013 was $ 2.2 B. Their YTD selling now stands at $9 B. Setelah mengalami kenaikan yang konstruktif di bulan April, bulan Mei 2013 terlihat ekuitas India berbalik menjadi bergejolak. Pada sisi makro data pertumbuhan PDB rendah, terjadi depresiasi INR karena isu stimulus moneter US FED dan faktor-faktor lokal seperti penjualan saham untuk mempertahankan minimal 25% kepemilikan oleh masyarakat sesuai aturan SEBI, membuat pasar terus bergolak. NIFTY indeks terdepresiasi sebesar 3,3% (USD) selama bulan Mei 2013.
