Location can be measured in two ways absolute location relative location Location Absolute location – exact location grid coordinates measured using lines of latitude & longitude on a local scale, a street address Location Relative location - location measured in relation to other locations or use landmarks to tell where it is Place What is it like there? Place Using physical and/or human characteristics to distinguish places from each other. Place Physical characteristics - the features of a place that occur naturally, or the natural landscape Place Human characteristics - the features of a place that are there because of the presence of human kind, the cultural landscape Movement How do places connect with each other? Movement Movement is the exchange of people, goods, ideas, or information between places or even people. Movement Interaction How do people adapt to or change their environment? Interaction Region What is it similar to? Region Using physical and/or human characteristics to link different places together. Region Physical characteristics the features of a place that occur naturally, or the natural landscape Human characteristics the features of a place that are there because of the presence of human kind, the cultural landscape Regions Formal Functional Vernacular Formal Region AKA uniform or homogenous An area in which everyone shares in one or more distinctive characteristics. Functional Region AKA nodal An area organized around a node or focal point. Vernacular Region AKA perceptual An area that people believe to exist as part of their cultural identity.
