STANDARDS:
SS6G5: The student will locate
selected features of Canada.
EQ#1: How does Canada’s location, climate, and natural
resources affect where Canadians choose to live and
work?

ancient rock, located in eastern and central Canada. Rich
in mineral ores and important to Canada’s economy.
Physical Geography
NOTES
• Canada has TEN provinces and THREE territories.
• Native American settlements began on Canada’s
western boundaries
• European settlements began on Canada’s eastern
boundaries
• The newest territory to join the domain of
Canada is Nunavut (1999).
CANADA’S LOCATION
• Canada is the world’s
SECOND largest
country in land size!
• Since Canada borders
3 oceans, its location
helps it as a leader in
world trade
• Because Canada
shares 3,000 miles of
border, it is the
U.S.A.’s largest trade
partner
Canada’s Shipping Ports
• Canada’s location
make shipping a
breeze…goods can
be shipped into
and out of Canada
without having to
travel through
other countries
• The Great Lakes
and the St.
Lawrence Seaway
allow goods to
come into Canada
from the Atlantic
Ocean.
Climate
Degrees Celsius in
January
CANADA’S CLIMATE
Location and climate have an
impact on where people
settle.
In the north, the Arctic tundra
contains permafrost. It is the
least populated region.
Arctic regions are comprised
of tundra, glaciers, and fjords.
A fjord is a narrow inlet of the
sea between cliffs or steep
slopes.
Compare these climate and population maps.

Notes
• The Great Lakes are part of the border with
the U.S.A.
• The Great Lakes are “split” between the two
countries. Which lake is the only one located
entirely in the U.S.A.?
• Can you name the Great Lakes?
• How do the lakes affect the weather in the
winter in New York state?

Eastern Canada: St. Lawrence River
This is a very important river! The St. Lawrence allowed explorers to travel
deep into North America by water. It serves as an important natural
resource for water usage and as a TRADE ROUTE.
Eastern and Central Canada: The Canadian Shield
Ancient rock just
below the surface of a
thin layer of soil.
Some of the ancient
rock is exposed above
the soil. The Canadian
Shield was carved out
by glaciers.
This region contains
many lakes and rivers.
The Canadian Shield is
a rolling, rocky area,
rich in mineral
deposits.
Eastern Canada: Hudson Bay
• Henry Hudson, looking for
the Northwest Passage,
discovered a huge inland
sea, now called the
Hudson Bay. The Hudson
Bay connects to the
Atlantic Ocean.
• Think of the Hudson Bay
as the “doughnut hole” in
the Canadian Shield!
Canada borders THREE oceans!! What are they?
Which is the ONLY COUNTRY to border Canada?
WESTERN Canada: Rocky
Mountains
This mountain chain is over 3,000 miles long! They stretch from New Mexico, USA to B.C.
