Chapter Overview Installing the TCP/IP Protocols Configuring TCP/IP 1 The Network And Dial-Up Connections Window 2 Icons in the Network And Dial-Up Connections Window Icon Description Local Area Connection One icon appears for each network interface adapter installed in the computer. Clicking this icon lets you install, remove, and configure Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking components for that specific network interface adapter. Make New Connection Clicking this icon lets you use the Network Connection Wizard to manually create additional modem and virtual private network (VPN) connections. 3 The Local Area Connection Properties Dialog Box 4 Windows Networking Component Types 5 Windows Networking Clients Client for Microsoft Networks Client Service for NetWare Gateway Service for NetWare (GSNW) 6 Windows Networking Protocols Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol NetBEUI Protocol AppleTalk Protocol 7 Default Windows 2000 Networking Components Plug and Play installs the following components automatically when the operating system detects a network interface adapter: Client for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) File And Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks You can remove these modules or add others as needed after the initial installation. 8 Installing a Windows 2000 Networking Component To install a Microsoft Windows 2000 networking component manually: 1. Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Click the Local Area Connection icon, and then select Properties. 3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click Install. 4. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, select a network component type, and then click Add. 5. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, select a component to install, and then click OK. 9 Removing a Windows 2000 Networking Component To remove a Windows 2000 networking component: 1. Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon, and then select Properties. 3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, select an installed component from the component list. 4. Click Uninstall. 10 Accessing the TCP/IP Client Configuration Interface To open the TCP/IP client configuration interface: 1. In the Start menu's Settings group, select Network And Dial-Up Connections to display the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon in the Network And Dial-Up Connections window, and then select Properties to display the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. 3. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) module in the components list, and then click Properties to display the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. 11 Basic TCP/IP Client Configuration Parameters IP address Subnet mask Default gateway Domain Name System (DNS) server address 12 IP Address Identifies the computer to the network Required for TCP/IP communication Must be unique on the network Must not be chosen at random Must be assigned by a network administrator 13 Other TCP/IP Parameters Parameter Function Subnet mask Indicates which Internet Protocol (IP) address bits identify the network and which identify the host Required for TCP/IP communication Default gateway Identifies the router that the computer should use to access other networks DNS server addresses Identifies the DNS servers that the client will use to resolve host and domain names into IP addresses 14 Opening the Advanced TCP/IP Configuration Interface To open the advanced TCP/IP configuration interface: 1. Open the Network And Dial-Up Connections window. 2. Open the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. 3. Open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. 4. Click Advanced to display the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box. 15 Configuring Advanced TCP/IP Parameters You can specify the following in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box: Multiple IP addresses Multiple default gateways Multiple DNS servers DNS suffix settings Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) server addresses IP Security (IPsec) TCP/IP filtering 16 Chapter Summary Use the Network And Dial-Up Connections window to manually install and configure the basic Windows 2000 networking components. Use the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box of a network interface adapter to install, remove, and configure the TCP/IP networking components for that specific network interface adapter. Use the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box to configure basic and advanced TCP/IP properties. The basic TCP/IP properties are IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server address. The advanced TCP/IP properties are multiple IP addresses, multiple default gateways, DNS options, WINS server 17 addresses, and TCP/IP options.
